On Sunday, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) took swift action by dispatching F-16 fighter jets and deploying flares to intercept several aircraft that inadvertently entered restricted airspace over Bedminster and East Rutherford in New Jersey.
These airspace breaches occurred during a Temporary Flight Restriction period as President Trump attended the FIFA World Cup final held at the nearby MetLife Stadium.
In an official statement, NORAD revealed, “Today, more than 10 general aviation aircraft breached restricted airspace, with three of these incidents necessitating intercepts by NORAD jets. During two of these intercepts, flares were discharged by NORAD aircraft, which may have caught the public’s eye.”
The purpose of the flares was to capture the pilots’ attention and ensure their awareness of the restricted zones.
Following these breaches, all involved general aviation aircraft were safely guided out of the restricted zones, marking the end of these airspace violations without any incidents.
Pilots were urged to check their Notice to Airmen (NOTAMS) and FAA Temporary Flight Restrictions in a post on X.
