The father of JonBenet Ramsey believes his daughter’s killer may be linked to an unsolved assault case involving a girl that attended the same dance studio as JonBenet.   

In speaking to Fox News, John Ramsey, 80, revealed his concern over a 1997 assault case that he feels displays stark similarities to his daughter’s grisly 1996 murder.

Ramsey’s daughter was found strangled and bludgeoned to death in the basement of the family’s Boulder, Colorado home the day after Christmas in 1996, when she was just six years old.  

Twenty-eight years later, authorities have still not been able to identify her killer. 

Following the November release of a Netflix documentary focused on the mysterious cold case, the separate, unsolved 1997 assault has garnered newfound interest.

‘I think there’s a very strong indication that there possibly is a connection,’ Ramsey told Fox News. 

‘The police blew it off in the beginning, and to my knowledge, never looked at that as an option. The police chief at that time said, “Well, it’s not the same because that little girl in the second incident was not murdered.” That’s absurd to say something like that.

In September 1997, nine months after JonBenet’s murder, an unknown suspect broke into a 14-year-old girl’s home, just two miles from the Ramsey residence, a 2004 report by 48 Hours detailed.

That evening, the suspect allegedly attacked the girl in her bedroom, but ultimately fled out the window as the victim’s mother heard whispering and confronted the attacker.

The girl’s father, who was out of town at the time of the alleged break-in said: ‘My feeling is he got into the house while they were out and hid inside the house, so he would have been in there for perhaps four to six hours, hiding.’

The victim’s father, who asked that his identity be obscured, even noted similarities to the Ramsey case.

‘The first thing that occurred to us was that it was the parallel to the Ramsey case, because it was exactly the same situation,’ the girl’s father said. 

Ramsey echoed the sentiments, claiming he believes the attacker’s ‘method of operation for this person was the same.’

‘I believe he was in our home when we got home from going out to friends for dinner with the kids,’ he said. 

Ramsey suspects the attacker was already inside their home and waited until the family was asleep before murdering his innocent daughter.

‘We went to bed, and he waited till we were asleep and attacked JonBenet,’ Ramsey said.

‘In the second case, the parents had gone out. They came home, and they set the burglar alarm on. And the mother heard a noise, eventually, and went into the child’s bedroom, and there was a person standing over her bed. So the person was in the house when they came home because they set the burglar alarm. He couldn’t have gotten in otherwise.’

Boulder police previously said there was no connection between the two incidents. 

‘Chief Mark Beckner said Boulder Police have known about this case for two years and previously looked at the sexual assault in association with the Ramsey murder. While the two cases have some similarities, detectives found no definitive connection at the time,’ Boulder Police said in an August 2001 update.

To this day, police have not indicated any possible connection between the two cases. 

Ramsey has since called out the Boulder Police Department for its inability to handle a case of that nature. 

‘The police department at the time was very poorly led,’ he told Fox News. 

‘They had, frankly, a group of misfits as detectives that shouldn’t have been in that role. They had no skill set or mindset to do that…and it just spiraled out of control very quickly.’

Ramsey plans to propose conducting further DNA testing on several items recovered from the crime scene using revolutionary new techniques 

In the years since the horrific crime, officials have sorted through more 2,500 pieces of evidence and approximately 40,000 reports containing more than a million pages detailing the investigation.

The Colorado Cold Case Review team has also provided the Boulder Police Department with a list of tips for the department to pursue, according to Chief Stephen Redfearn – who is the fifth police chief to take on the case since 1996. 

Ramsey now hopes to sit down with the new chief later this month, hoping the leader will use his powers to recruit the FBI to the case.

Ramsey plans to propose conducting further DNA testing on several items recovered from the crime scene using revolutionary new techniques.

The grieving father is more confident than ever that a breakthrough is imminent and plans to sit down with Redfearn and representatives from testing labs to nail down an action plan. 

‘We have been asking and praying for this over the past 28 years,’ Ramsey told the US Sun.

‘We are encouraged that the police will finally use the FBI’s skills and resources to help solve our case.’
