Saira Khan has insisted flying flags is ‘intimidating and divisive’ and said she is in ‘100 per cent’ agreement with Gary Neville after she was condemned for calling flag-raisers ‘absolute saddos who drink a lot’.

The former Loose Women star, 55, sparked outrage yesterday when she made the comments on Jeremy Vine’s talk show and backed Neville’s claim that ‘angry middle-aged white men’ are dividing Britain.

After angry viewers said people living in Britain should have ‘no problem with the flags’, Saira took to her Instagram to respond with a series of videos and pictures.

In her post, she reiterated her support for Neville’s remarks made in a video posted to LinkedIn on Friday saying: ‘Yes I agree with @gneville2 100% – the intention of some people going around putting up flags is “intimidating and divisive”.’

The former defender, 50, spoke about the Manchester synagogue terrorist attack, but his speech quickly descended into a rant claiming division is being ‘created’ by ‘angry, middle-aged white men, who know exactly what they’re doing’.

In her video, Saira said people need to ‘calm down’ and ‘think about the word intention’.

‘When you look at somebody who is holding the flag you do make a judgements about what they’re representing,’ she added.

She then told her followers to compare a picture of Tommy Robinson speaking to a sea of flags and a picture of her and her children holding a St George’s flag and wearing England shirts.

‘You make up your mind about what is the intention and just comment below because I think intention is key,’ she said.

Saira also included the videos she took from her car of four men using a ladder to hang flags from a lamppost next to a roundabout at 2.30 in the afternoon.

She had mentioned the videos on Jeremy Vine’s Channel 5 show yesterday, saying she saw them ‘creating nuisance’ and questioning why they were not ‘in a job’ or ‘volunteering’ instead.

‘Why are you doing this? Causing a public nuisance and also causing a health hazard,’ she added.

When Jeremy asked if she thought the men she saw hanging flags on the roundabout where ‘lagered up’, she said there was ‘evidence’ they ‘probably drink a lot’ – citing ‘the shape of their bodies’ as proof.

‘I don’t care if that sounds controversial, I’m making a judgement on their appearance,’ she quipped, adding: ‘They had the scarves [flags] wrapped round as capes, as I was kind of filming them and they were giving me gestures and I just thought you’re saddos, you’re absolute saddos.’

In the first video she posted of the men, one wore an England jersey as he and another held the ladder whilst one, wrapped in a flag, climbed up and the fourth stood by in a white rain mac.

When one of her children started whispering something to her in the background, she can be heard saying: ‘Shh, don’t start.’

The second video shows the man in the England shirt throwing up what appears to be a celebratory gesture and pointing at her and laughing when he noticed she was filming.

Saira then barked at someone in the car: ‘Put your window down so I can f***ing see.’

Speaking to her followers again in her final video, the TV panellist said: ”I am telling you as a 55-year-old British Asian that seeing the flags hoisted up everywhere like this after an extreme right wing rally is very intimidating, its making people uncomfortable.’

She then claimed her friends, who are ‘men and women of colour’ who go to football matches and have ‘been England fans from day one’, told her they ‘feel intimidated again’ and like ‘we are back in the 70s’.

‘That is not a good move for our country. It is not a nice place to be when community members feel intimidated, that’s not nice. We need to think about that and inclusivity and what we want our country to be,’ she added.

In her caption, Saira also told anyone who may unfollow her off the back of her comments on Jeremy Vine’s show and in her post to ‘just do it… we don’t need an announcement’.

However, that didn’t stop people from commenting their thoughts, with one writing: ‘There shouldn’t be a judgement regarding our flag! So it’s fine to fly a flag in football but nowhere else.

‘My parents have a flag in their garden and have done for 6 or so years. My older neighbours do too. It’s patriotism for our country…simple!’

Another commented: ‘The flag should be flown everywhere in GB. It’s not far right to want your country to be a peaceful place to live, where it’s own traditions and customs are the norm and not considered as being offensive to others.’

‘Love seeing the British flags in any way shape or form, I see patriotism,’ a third wrote.

It comes as Neville is facing backlash from builders at his £400million construction site after he ordered them to take down a Union flag.

Neville, who is known for his Left-wing views, revealed in a video message posted on the LinkedIn website that he had the flag removed ‘instantly’ as soon as he saw it.

But construction workers who had been flying the flag at his St Michael’s office redevelopment site in Bootle Street, Manchester, were outraged by his intervention.

One worker accused Neville, who has become a property developer since he stopped playing football, of being unpatriotic and suppressing free speech.

He said that the former England footballer saw the Union Flag as he walked past, and immediately went to the gate and asked to speak to the construction site manager over the radio system, so he could demand it was taken down.

The employee exclusively told the Daily Mail: ‘He was walking past when he saw the flag flying on the fifth floor along with a Moldovan flag and another one.

‘He got on the radio to one of the workers and started asking why the Union Flag was up there. He only mentioned the Union Flag, not the other two – and said it had to come down.

‘Obviously he is the boss, and we are not going to argue with him. But Union Flags are normally put on building sites. It happens all over the country.

‘Gary Neville played for England, but he won’t let us put a flag up to celebrate the country where we live. It’s caused a lot of anger. This wasn’t discussed, we were just told.

‘He didn’t mention the Moldovan flag or the other. He only had a problem with the Union Flag.

‘Afterwards we had to do “toolbox chats” for everyone about political messages on the building site. Basically we had to explain why we can’t have flags, and we can’t express our political views because Gary Neville says we can’t.’
