Four in ten women now take control of the barbecue more often than their partners

It has long been seen as a masculine domain, part of a primal urge dating back to the days of cavemen.

But the stereotype of ‘manning the grill’ might need to be disposed of – as a survey has found four in ten women now take control of outdoor cooking more often than their partners.

Not only that, 43 per cent claim they are better than men at cooking on fire and coals, while 46 per cent are annoyed when men try to hog the grill.

It isn’t just women who have moved on from the stereotype, with 45 per cent of all young people thinking it is outdated.

Four in ten say they will host or attend a barbecue for the Coronation weekend, although a similar number say meat-only affairs are old-fashioned, with many planning to go veggie or vegan.

Guy James Whitworth, spokesperson for No Meat May, which commissioned the survey, said: ‘BBQs are a staple of the British summertime, but with the average meaty BBQ for four releasing more greenhouse gases into the environment than an 80-mile car journey, it’s more important than ever for Brits to try plant-based food on the grill.

‘And with almost half of Brits saying they’d opt to try a plant-based diet as a nod to the new King’s environmental activism, the Coronation weekend and the month of May is the perfect opportunity to try more plant-based alternatives on the barbecue and beyond – for the planet, our health, and animals.

‘Our research also shows a third of Brits are looking differently at the food they eat due to the cost of living crisis. Plant-based proteins based on pulses, legumes and wholegrains are often cheaper than their meat counterparts, deliciously versatile, and a healthier option than red meat.

‘Giving up meat has never been easier. We want to encourage Brits to challenge themselves by joining No Meat May 2023, where they’ll get thousands of tasty and affordable plant-based recipes, free cooking demos, and people from around the world sharing recipes and cheering them on.’
