It is time for a new round of nominations for nefarious news nonsense! In recognizing the efforts of the unprofessional press, journalistic sloth, and deserved media mockery, we nominate the efforts for end-of-the-year honors. To commemorate the past of muckraking reporting and shoe leather investigation, we have created The Golden Remington Awards. Our trophy honors the olden days when hard-scrabble hacks committed actual journalism and hammered out dispatches on those hefty word-smith devices.

Regularly, we compile some of the most fractured examples of journalism, nominating them for the un-coveted dishonor of “winning” our un-distinguished Remmy Award. At the end of the year, we recognize the greats by gathering examples in a number of categories and judiciously choosing the deserving performances.

Here are the latest nominees for The Remmys.

Distinguished Explanatory Reporting

As President Trump sent National Guard troops into D.C. to stem crime, Lawrence had what he felt was the perfect dose of evidence that there was no need for this effort.

He played a clip from the movie “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington”. For his claim that there was no need for Trump to step in and improve the nation’s capital, he offered up as proof a clip of Jimmy Stewart in Union Station. As Larry explains in the provided video, we do not see any National Guardsmen patrolling the train depot.

In commenting on the moves by the Cracker Barrel executives to rescind the company’s alteration of its logo and planned redesign of restaurants, CNN took a rather myopic approach.

Despite widespread opposition from its customer base – including the Democratic Party – here was CNN declaring that the opposition was coming only from the right-wing.

In looking over the Jimmy Kimmel commentary, CNN’s media maven tried to sound insightful as he came up with a rather stark dose of obviousness. He proclaimed that the TV host was more popular than he had been one week earlier.

This is the opposite of a surprise, considering that Kimmel was receiving around-the-clock coverage for that week.

The Mets announcer brought up the fact that Matt Shaw of the Chicago Cubs missed a game last week because he attended the funeral of Charlie Kirk. Shaw was actually a friend of Kirk, but that was not the only obliviousness from the play-by-play man. It was shown that previously Cohen missed a broadcast because his family was in mourning for the passing of the family dog.
