Governor Greg Abbott of Texas announced on Sunday that the state is actively addressing the influence of “leftist ideologies” among academic staff. He highlighted a recent incident involving a college professor who was reportedly dismissed due to their beliefs.

Abbott took to social media to share an update from Axios, regarding Art Markman, a professor at the University of Texas. Markman claimed he was removed from his administrative role in September because of differing ideologies with the university’s leadership.

In his post, Abbott reiterated Markman’s assertions, stating, “A University of Texas professor was removed from an administrative position due to ideological disagreements.”

Abbott further emphasized the state’s objective, stating, “Texas is focusing on educators who prioritize the promotion of leftist ideologies over equipping students to become future leaders. It’s crucial to eliminate indoctrination and refocus on foundational education at all educational levels.”

Previously this year, a professor from Texas A&M University was dismissed following backlash from conservatives over a lesson on gender identity and sexuality, a situation that ultimately led to the resignation of the university’s president.

The moves come as the Trump administration has sought to play a bigger role in higher education throughout the country, particularly regarding stamping out what it sees as leftist dogma.

Recently, the administration urged a group of nine universities, including the University of Texas at Austin, to sign a 10-point plan that would guarantee them certain funding advantages if the schools agreed to President Trump’s demands.

Several schools have already rejected the funding compact.

University of Texas officials did not say whether they would sign the agreement but said they “welcome the new opportunity presented to us and we look forward to working with the Trump Administration on it.”
