SHARKS have been tormenting surfers and swimmers down the US coasts this year from sighting of monster 8ft beasts to green and dirty teeth.

As of November 2, 2023, there have been 63 shark attacks worldwide this year, 34 of which happened in the United States, reported Tracking Sharks.

Ten of these attacks have been fatal.

“Each year there are around 100 shark attack bites around the globe,” said Tracking Sharks.

According to AZ Animals, the current number for 2023 isn’t any higher than in recent years.

The U.S. Sun has compiled a list of some of the most recent attacks in the United States.

‘8-FOOT LONG’ SHARK

Fifty-eight-year-old Mika Morita was surfing the Kewalo Basin Hawaii in April when a tiger shark attacked him.

Morita lost his right foot during the attack.

“Somehow he came face to face with the shark,” Kamu, Morita’s son noted.

“With the foot still in its mouth, he wrapped his leg around it, bear-hugged it, because he was throwing punches earlier and it wasn’t working,” Kamu continued, “so that’s when he started going after the gills and the eyes.”

He managed to make it out of the water, but it was the help of other beachgoers that kept him alive.

Morita instructed people on how to make a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

Though he lost his foot, Kamu stated that he hasn’t lost his sense of humor or his positive outlook on life, reported KITV 4.

LONG ISLAND TRAP

Lyudmila Emag was swimming off the coast of Long Island on the Fourth of July when she was locked in the jaws of a shark.

The 47-year-old from Brooklyn, felt something grab her by her thigh and screamed to a friend “something is biting me,” she told Eyewitness News ABC7NY.

“I felt like I had to take it off, I had to push it off from my leg

“I felt like I was in a trap,” recalled Emag.

She was taken to the emergency room at South Shore University Hospital to be treated.

“She didn’t ask for pain medications,” stated Dr. Nadia Baranchuk.

“I think her adrenaline was still probably pretty high after this.”

Emag declined any stitches and was sent home with antibiotics.

This was only one of the five shark attacks off New York beaches during Fourth of July week, stated officials.

Earlier, on the same day as Emag’s attack, Dr. Baranchuk recalled a patient she treated earlier that needed more care than Emag.

Surgery was performed on the patient to remove a shark tooth from their hand.

SURFBOARDING NIGHTMARE

Another Fourth of July weekend attack included 21-year-old Chris Pospisil who saw his foot in the mouth of a shark.

Pospisil was surfboarding off New Smyrna Beach in Florida when a shark pulled him from his surfboard and dragged him under the water.

A Surfline live-stream camera caught the encounter.

“I thought my foot might be gone when it first attacked me,” Chris told Good Morning America.

Friend, Reece Redish, rushed into action, getting him out of the water and to first responders.

Off the coast of California, another surfer suffered a shark bite to the leg.

The 52-year-old victim was in the water off Linda Mar Beach in October “when something bit his lower leg”, reported the Pacifica Police Department.

He was able to exit to the water and was transported to the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, they continued.

The wet suit of the victim was pierced, but he “could not confirm it was a shark” because he “could not see what bit his leg.”

RARE NYC ATTACK

Tatyana Koltunyuk was attacked by a shark on Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York this past August.

The Ukrainian immigrant, 65, was standing in the water around 6 pm when she felt something bump into her hard and noticed it was a shark on its belly looking up at her, stated her daughter Dasha, on Good Morning America.

“She saw all of its teeth. She described how green and dirty they were. And then the shark attacked. She remembers a cloud of blood in the water,” continued Dasha.

Koltunyuk was pulled to shore where a life-saving tourniquet was applied to her leg before first responders arrived.

She was taken to Jamaica Hospital in severe but stable condition.

Dr. Gavin Naylor, the Program Director at the Florida Program for Shark Research, affirmed it was a shark bite and she lost “20 pounds of flesh”, reported the New York Post.

The last reported shark bite was in 1958 off Staten Island, per ABC7NY.

The most recent attack at Rockaway Beach was in 1953.

After the rare mauling, the beach closed briefly.

9-YEAR OLD VICTIM

A shark attacked a 9-year-old boy in shallow water off the coast of North Carolina in August, reported The News & Observer.

While swimming at Oak Island Beach, a “juvenile or small species of shark” bit the child, according to police reports.

He was driven to the Dosher Memorial Hospital by family, stated police.

“According to photos provided, by the family, bite marks and a small wound were visible, though no major injuries were sustained, and stitches were not needed.”

SHARK BITE TO THE HEAD

Mark Summersett, 38, was attacked by a shark, suffering injuries to both sides of his face in Flordia this September.

He was surfing around 7:50 am at New Smyrna Beach then jumped off his board into the water.

All of a sudden a shark bit his face, tearing into the right side of his face and leaving marks along his chin and mouth too, reported WESH.

“It was pressure, and I’ll tell you that pressure, it was like a crunch,” recalled Summersett.

“I heard the crunch. It felt like a bear trap crunching on my face.”

He was rushed to the hospital where he got about 20 stitches.
