Price of hatred

HOW sad that on the day we remembered those who died for our freedoms, a clampdown on rights to protest should be under discussion.

But that is the consequence of the hatred repeatedly shown by demonstrators with utter contempt for those freedoms.

Heroes who fought the Nazis did not sacrifice their lives in order that mindless bigots today could march dressed as terrorists, glorying in their support for Hitler’s anti-Semitism.

They would also turn in their graves knowing that, on Armistice Day, drunken knuckleheads took it upon themselves to “defend” our freedoms.

The fact is the far-right morons should never have been given the excuse to act.

Any suggestion that, far-right violence aside, the latest pro-Palestine march was “peaceful” is absurd.

It was not as violent as it might have been only because police refused to nick on the spot people blatantly calling for Jews to be killed or openly flaunting their support for Hamas murderers.

Now the Met is left playing catch-up, appealing for the identities of masked hate-peddlers, and, after weeks of such marches, the bigots are emboldened to think their racism is acceptable. It is not.

The march should never have gone ahead on Remembrance Weekend.

Yes, there are some who do want peace, but many knowingly march alongside those who want the terrorists who slaughtered 1,200 Jews to win.

The fastest roads to peace remain for the Hamas terrorists to give up their hostages and cede their malign grip on Gaza — but you didn’t see any placards calling for that.

Indeed, those few marchers willing to criticise the Hamas massacre as much as the Israeli response were jostled and intimidated by those who regard the Hamas baby-killers as freedom fighters.

The silent majority are not fooled.

They can see the horrors of racism and calls for genocide happening in plain sight.

With rights come responsibilities and the pro-Palestine march organisers ducked theirs.

Those who abuse our precious freedoms put them in dire peril.

Had our fill

ATTEMPTS to curb fuel forecourt profiteers over the years have moved with all the speed of a petrol car accidentally filled with diesel.

Every hint of Government action has quickly stalled.

So it is encouraging to hear Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho promise that the Competition and Markets Authority will be handed new powers to tackle petrol station bosses who hike prices at the first opportunity but are painfully slow to pass on any reductions.

It should be a step towards the PumpWatch system The Sun has long campaigned for.

Motorists have been ripped off for far too long.
