BED bugs have become a serious issue in major cities, and experts warn that a common mistake can lead to serious infestation.

The creep crawlies have been running rampant in cities like Paris, New York, and Chicago, many people don’t realize how easy it is for bed bugs to spread throughout their homes.

A major factor in creating a bed bug infestation in your home has to do with where you put your luggage.

“People are accidentally moving [bed bugs] around with luggage, purses, any kind of bag, sometimes even on their person,” Ian Williams, a technical service manager at Orkin told Local Fox affiliate WNYW-TV.

He continued saying that the high turnaround rates of hotels and short-term rentals add to the issue.

“Be careful where you put your luggage,” Williams told the network.

The common practice of putting our luggage directly into our rooms, or putting our clothes back into draws is not the best idea according to experts.

It’s best to check your home for bed bugs since they can quickly spread.

Each bed bug is able to lay up to five eggs a day and live for several months without food.

“They can slow their metabolism and just wait for us,” Jean-Michel Berenger, an entomologist at Mediterranee University Hospital in Marseille told the news outlet.

According to the entomologist, the natural carbon dioxide that comes from humans “will reactivate them … and they’ll come back to bite you.”

To stop the issue in its tracks, the City for Prevention recommends people get rid of clutter around their homes to limit the places bed bugs can hide without you knowing.

Experts also recommend using bed bug traps or using bleach and alcohol to kill bed bugs.

However, if the bed bugs start to get out of hand it’s best to call a professional.
