A BED bug infestation has created a nightmare situation for residents living in apartment buildings in one US town.
The invasion began in mid-September, but residents are still struggling to combat the pests.
“You could just see them walking like lobsters coming out of the ocean, you know what I mean? And I’d kill those suckers,” Jo Ella ‘Jada’ Tarbutton-Springfield told local NBC affiliate WWLP.
Tarbutton-Springfield is just one resident at the Walter Salvo House in Northampton, Massachusetts – located about 100 miles west of Boston – that has been affected by the bed bugs.
The pests were first reported in mid-September, according to MassLive.
Another resident, Heidi Sousse, told WWLP: “I had a bed bug that was in my ear, it was dead, I mean it’s gross.”
“I like looked up bed bugs on Google and I pulled up a picture and I was like ‘ah dang it, I think it’s one of those.’”
The Walter Salvo House property is managed by the Northampton Housing Authority, which has brought in an exterminator to test the building’s nearly 200 units.
“They brought two bed-bug sniffing dogs and were testing all units and common areas,” Northampton Housing Authority’s Executive Director Cara Leiper told WWLP.
Leiper said that heat treatments have been performed on some units, but the problem has persisted.
“There’s a heat treatment client preparation checklist, their apartment number and the date of their treatment is written on it. It gives them a detailed list of what they need to do,” said Leiper.
But residents aren’t following that list.
People dealing with bed bugs should be checking items where the pests could be living and breeding after the exterminator performs a treatment.
While bed bugs are relatively harmless, they are notoriously difficult to get rid of and can be extremely distressing for people dealing with them.
People usually notice bites on their skin first – often before even seeing the insects.
Bed bugs typically live in mattresses and other furniture, but can also be found in picture frames and even wallpaper.
A full report on the tested units at the Walter Salvo House is expected in the coming days.
The results will determine the next steps for the building.
