The House passed a resolution on Friday honoring Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, with 58 Democrats voting against the resolution, 38 voting present, and 22 not voting.

The House voted 310-58 to pass the resolution honoring the life of Kirk who was assassinated on September 10 while speaking to a crowd at Utah Valley University. The resolution said Kirk was a “courageous American patriot” who aimed to “elevate truth.”

The vote served as a tense moment for House Democrats, many whom did not agree with Kirk’s politics but felt compelled to vote for the measure to denounce his brutal killing.

At a closed-door meeting on Thursday Democrats reportedly fretted that voting against the resolution may make them the targets of violence.

Fifty-eight Democrats opposed the resolution, 38 voted present, and 22 did not vote on the resolution.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) raged against the Democrats that voted against the resolution honoring Kirk, writing on X:

History won’t forget. Neither should we. These 58 Democrats voted against condemning Charlie Kirk’s assassination:

Amo Beatty Bell Bishop Brown Carson Carter (LA) Cherfilus-McCormick Clarke (NY) Cleaver Clyburn Crockett Davis (IL) Escobar Espaillat Fields Figures Foushee Frost Garcia (TX) Gomez Green, Al (TX) Hayes Horsford Ivey Jackson (IL) Jayapal Johnson (GA) Kamlager-Dove Kelly (IL) Krishnamoorthi Lee (PA) McBath McIver Menendez Mfume Moore (WI) Moulton Ocasio-Cortez Omar Pressley Quigley Ramirez Randall Scott (VA) Sewell Simon Strickland Sykes Thanedar Thompson (MS) Tlaib Underwood Velázquez Waters Watson Coleman Williams (GA) Wilson (FL)

The White House rapid response team wrote, “58 Democrats just voted against a simple resolution honoring the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk after his assassination last week. Disgraceful.”
