Here’s everything you need to know about the environmentalist and her current health battle.

Who is Saalumarada Thimmakka?
Saalumarada Thimmakka, 112, also known as Aala Marada Thimmakka, was an Indian environmentalist from the State of Karnataka.
She is most recognised for her work in planting and tending to 385 banyan trees along a 45km stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur.
She has also planted nearly 8,000 other trees, with the support of her husband.
Thimmakka received no formal education and worked as a casual labourer in a local quarry.
She and her husband could not have children and it is said that Thimmakka began planting banyan trees in lieu of children.
But her environmental work has now been honoured with the National Citizen’s Award of India.
Her actions were later recognised by the Government of India and she was conferred with Padma Shri in 2019.
A U.S. environmental organisation based in Los Angeles and Oakland, California, called Thimmakka’s Resources for Environmental Education is named after her.

When was Saalumarada Thimmakka hospitalized?
Thimmakka was hospitalized on October 3 after complaining of tiredness and breathlessness.
She is now being monitored by doctors at the Intensive Care Unit at Apollo Hospital, Jayanagar.
According to her pulmonologist at Apollo, doctors have been unable to administer the full range of medication usually prescribed for someone with her history of asthma due to her extreme old age.
How is Saalumarada Thimmakka?
The environmentalist’s condition is currently stable, according to her treating pulmonologist.
“She has a known history of asthma, but there is nothing to be concerned about, as of now. We will continue to monitor her condition for another 2-3 days,” they said.
Dr Ravindra Mehta, one of the pulmonologists whom Thimmakka has been consulting for over 8 years now, said that her severe asthma, combined with age-related issues, is a concern.
“Activity is a problem for her because of her age and fragility. She has a reduced lung capacity and has difficulty breathing due to being severely asthmatic, so it is always concerning when she is hospitalised,” he added.
