Her death was confirmed by her father, Loren Broadbent, in a Facebook post.

“With great sadness, I must inform you all that our beloved friend, mentor, and daughter Hydeia, passed away today after living with AIDS since birth,” the post read.

“Despite facing numerous challenges throughout her life, Hydeia remained determined to spread hope and positivity through education around HIV/AIDS.”

The activist was abandoned as an infant at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, where she was adopted by her parents, Loren and Patricia Broadbent.

Doctors did not believe she would survive past age five as she was born addicted to heroin.

Broadbent was ultimately diagnosed HIV-positive when she was three years old, although she had the illness since birth.

Despite all odds, she lived an impactful and fulfilling life.

Broadbent launched her career as an activist during her childhood.

She talked openly about her health journey on national platforms, including Oprah, 20/20, Good Morning America, and notably a 2006 Nickelodeon special called A Conversation with Magic Johnson.

“I want people to know that we’re just normal people,” she told Johnson during the Nickelodeon special.

“Aww, you don’t have to cry because we are normal people. OK? We are,” he replied.

“Hydeia means the world to me,” Johnson said at a Los Angeles screening of The Announcement, a movie documentary about the NBA legend’s journey with HIV.

“When I first met her 20 years ago and saw how emotional and devastated she was by the treatment she was getting from other people, it just broke my heart into pieces.

“That very moment was both sad and inspirational. It made me want to do more to bring awareness to the disease and educate people so that no one would have to feel the way she did that day.”

She has also been featured in The New York Times, Essence, and People, among others.

At age 12, she spoke at the Republican National Convention, where she made headlines for saying, “I am the future, and I have AIDS.”

Broadbent was blunt when talking about the reality of living with HIV.

“I try to tell it as real as I can, that this isn’t a disease they want,” Broadbent said in an interview with CNN.

“The current generation, they don’t know the reality of HIV/AIDS.”

The activist said that although she was often pictured talking to celebrities in the spotlight, she stressed that this disease was not a walk in the park.

Broadbent said, “They look at me and Magic Johnson and think you can pop a pill and be OK.

“They don’t know the seriousness of the disease. They don’t know the side effects of the medicine. They don’t know the financial realities of the situation. They really don’t know that you can die.”
