A FORMER Costco employee shared the supposed real reason for receipt checks and it is not to prevent theft.

The ex-staff member revealed that the controversial policy could actually be in place to save customers money.

They shared their insight on Reddit as the user @ManicHispanic85 in a post titled “How much is caught at the exit receipt check?”.

The Redditor revealed that the exit greeters were in fact there to help customers save money.

This was done by making sure cashiers had put through the correct items and prices as the poster emphasized that they were not enforcing anti-theft measures.

They said: “Trust me, we’re not loss prevention, we have loss prevention in the store and that’s not us.

“We’re literally just trying to make sure our cashiers do the job right, and when we DO catch it, all the information gets stored.”

The Redditor claimed that this policy was in place for the customer and not the store.

They said: “This is not to benefit anyone but the member to improve the experience overall.

“Because we DON’T want you to get home and go ‘F**k, I gotta go back, they double charged me for this thing.’”

Costco has given a similar reason for its receipt-checking policy, according to its website.

The retailer added that the measure was standard practice throughout its locations to verify purchases.

Costco said: “We do this to double-check that the items purchased have been correctly processed by our cashiers.

“It’s our most effective method of maintaining accuracy in inventory control.”

Costco added that the measure also ensures that customers have been charged for the right items and the correct price.

Another commenter on the Reddit post shared a story on how an exit greeter saved them money with this policy.

Reddiot @tillow said: “I was caught at the exit once.

“They realized I had been charged twice for one my purchases and had the customer service desk issue a refund.”
