Tragedies often amplify underlying issues that have long been overlooked. A recent incident on a Florida highway has cast a spotlight on the ongoing problem of non-English speaking illegal immigrants driving massive trucks across the United States. The administration of Joe Biden, alongside the Democratic Party, has faced criticism for the continued influx of undocumented immigrants at the southern border. While past cases such as those involving Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nungaray gained attention, it was the deaths of three individuals that heightened awareness of this serious concern, which appears to be worsening.

Following the Florida incident, both the Department of Transportation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have taken action. Since late October, an operation led by ICE and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has focused on a section of Interstate 40, resulting in the apprehension of 70 undocumented immigrants. Among these, 34 were found driving semi-trucks unlawfully per Oklahoma law. The source of these commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) is unsurprising. Marcos Charles, Executive Associate Director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, commented on the situation:

As more details emerge, the situation appears increasingly alarming. Dubbed “Operation Guardian,” the initiative revealed that 26 of the undocumented truck drivers held CDLs from California, Illinois, and New York, states frequently associated with such issues. More concerning, eight of these individuals were operating large trucks without any CDL at all. Those apprehended hail from diverse countries including China, Guatemala, India, and Uzbekistan. Many have criminal histories involving violent offenses.

Operation Guardian is part of a series of efforts to tackle the problem of undocumented truck drivers. Earlier, in September, a similar three-day operation along the same stretch of I-40 saw ICE and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol detain 91 illegal immigrant truck drivers. Besides immigration violations, some are suspected of engaging in activities such as money laundering, human smuggling, and drug trafficking.

Since the Florida crash, the Department of Transportation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have become involved. Since late October, ICE, along with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, has targeted a portion of Interstate 40. The operation has nabbed 70 illegal immigrants, 34 of whom were operating semi-trucks in violation of Oklahoma state law. It is no surprise where the illegal immigrants are obtaining their commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Executive Associate Director Marcos Charles had this to say:

“For the second time in just the past month, the state of Oklahoma and ICE have banded together to bolster public safety along Oklahoma’s highways, identifying and apprehending illegal aliens who are in the country illegally and have been recklessly issued a commercial driver’s license by states like California, Illinois, and New Jersey. Many of the illegal aliens arrested behind the wheel of an 80,000-pound tractor trailer can’t even read basic English, endangering everyone they encounter on the roads.”

Also, as is usual, the details just get more disturbing. The sting operation called “Operation Guardian” discovered, as stated above, that 26 of the illegal immigrant truckers had CDL licenses from the usual suspect states of California, Illinois, and New York. But the best part, eight of the drivers were operating 18-wheelers with no CDL license at all. That’s right, no CDL license. The illegal immigrant truckers picked up by Operation Guardian reads like a who’s who of the United Nations from countries such as China, Guatemala, India, Uzbekistan, as well as other nations. Many also have extensive rap sheets that include convictions for violent crimes.

Operation Guardian is the latest operation to date to catch illegal immigrant truckers. In September, during a three-day period, ICE and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol picked up 91 illegal immigrant truck drivers along the same stretch of I-40. In addition to immigration violations, others may have allegedly committed other crimes, like money laundering, human smuggling, and conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

But it’s not just cracking down on states that issue licenses by the Department of Transportation that is needed, but on the companies hiring them as well. Zach Meiborg owns Meiborg Trucking in Illinois and says the industry is being outsourced to foreign companies. He says foreign companies have no problem hiring illegal immigrants or breaking laws. Meiborg added:

Their dispatch is over there, their safety is over there, the recruiting is over there, and they do it all digitally online. So they’re running foreign labor, imported from overseas, not trained, they’re paying them 1099, not W-2, not complying with any of the ACA or state tax laws or federal tax laws.

He adds that the companies are creating digital logbooks and self-certifying that they are following regulations with very little or no oversight. 

It’s a good start by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to clean up the mess left by the Biden administration. But as someone who, in a few weeks, will be road-tripping from St. Louis to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for a family wedding, you can bet I am going to be eyeballing who is driving the 18-wheeler in the lane next to me.
