The chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has rejected concerns raised by some opposition members about Nigeria moving towards a one-party system. After meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on May 9, Ganduje assured reporters that there is no need for alarm if the APC gains control in most states and at the national level. He expressed that if other political parties observe the positive impact of the APC’s governance and choose to join voluntarily, it would not be a problem.
Ganduje addressed concerns about the possibility of Nigeria becoming a one-party state and emphasized that it should not be a cause for worry. He suggested that if other parties acknowledge the benefits of the ruling party’s policies and decide to align themselves with the APC voluntarily, it can be seen as a positive development. Ganduje highlighted that a one-party state should not be imposed but should instead result from a consensus and acknowledgment of good governance practices.

According to Ganduje, the idea of a one-party state should not be a concern as long as it happens through mutual agreement and voluntary cooperation among political parties. He stressed that if other parties recognize the effective governance of the APC and willingly choose to join forces with them, it should be viewed as a welcome development. Ganduje emphasized that the decision to move towards a one-party state should not be forced but rather should stem from a realization and appreciation of the ruling party’s good governance track record.
Today China is one of the strongest countries in the world and it’s a one party system. We are not saying we are working for one-party system but if this is the wish of Nigerians, we cannot quarrel with that. You know they say to0 many cooks spoil the soup, too many political parties spoil governance.”
