A LAWYER on TikTok has warned shoppers that they can get arrested for using self-checkout.

George LaMarche is a lawyer who told his TikTok viewers that if they accidentally leave the store without paying for an item, they can still get charged for the offense.

“So you’re at the grocery store and you got a cart full of groceries and decide to go to the self-checkout,” he said in the video.

“Maybe you’re having some trouble scanning some items and maybe you just forget.

“That’s a crime, it’s a petit larceny.”

LaMarche said that whether you accidentally leave without scanning an item or you intentionally don’t scan some items, you can get charged for stealing from the store.

“It’s punishable after a year in jail or three years probation,” he said.

“If you go through self-checkout, make sure you pay for everything and do not leave the store without having paid.”

Many grocery stores have frustrating self-checkout systems that can make it hard to scan items, or even prompt people to not want to scan their items.

Kroger is a grocer especially under fire for its self-checkouts because of how sensitive they can be.

Another TikTok user named Indie posted a video about how Kroger self-checkouts don’t understand when certain items are in the bagging area.

The machines also shut down when they can’t sense items properly, prompting an employee to come to check for theft.

“You go to put a lightweight item into the bag and you do, and then she says, ‘Please place your item in the bag,’” Indie said in the video.

“And as I am scanning the next item, ‘Please scan your next item.’

“And I’m like b***h you didn’t even give me two seconds before you’re on my case.”

Take LaMarche’s advice and don’t let frustration boil over during situations like these.

If self-checkout is the only option, be sure to carefully scan every item and pay fully before leaving.
