The highly anticipated results of the Virginia attorney general race have finally been unveiled. The contest featured incumbent Republican Jason Miyares going head-to-head with Democrat Jay Jones. According to Decision Desk HQ, Jones has emerged victorious.
While this race maintained a low profile for much of the election season, it shot to national prominence in October following two major developments concerning Jay Jones.
The first revelation involved Jones being caught driving at 116 MPH in a 70 MPH zone, resulting in a reckless driving charge. This incident raised eyebrows, especially since he was vying to become the state’s chief law enforcement officer, yet seemed to disregard public safety. The situation was further complicated when it came to light that Jones received a lenient plea deal, sparing him jail time—a luxury not often afforded to other Virginians facing similar charges. To add to the controversy, Jones reportedly completed his community service by “volunteering” for his own political action committee.

It was the Jay Jones text messaging scandal, however, that really rocked the race and put the national spotlight on Virginia. Jones, it was revealed, had texted a GOP colleague a series of sick fantasies in which he envisioned putting “two bullets” in the head of then-Speaker of the House of Delegates Todd Gilbert, a Republican, and dreamed of watching Gilbert’s two young sons die in their mother’s arms. Sick, twisted stuff, yet very few Democrats had the guts to call for Jones to do the right thing and drop out of the race.
Despite the utter failure of Democrats to force Jones off the ticket – former President Barack Obama even appeared with him over the weekend! – some Virginia Democrats said they’d cross the aisle and vote for Miyares. Jay Jones should have been political kryptonite for the left, but many embraced him anyway.
Going into Tuesday’s election, RedState’s Adam Turner gave a rundown of the polling situation:
In the Attorney General’s race, following the October Surprises against Democrat Jay Jones, incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares has established a RCP poll lead over Jones, 46.8 percent to 43.3 percent. Miyares is leading in all 10 polls in the average, although some by closer margins.
The Democrat ticket of Abigail Spanberger, Ghazala Hashmi, and Jay Jones had consistently polled ahead of the Republican slate of Winsome Earle-Sears, John Reid, and Jason Miyares for most of the year. That remained true for Earle-Sears and Reid, although ground was made up as time went on, but Miyares started to pull ahead of Jones following the text scandal.
Jason Miyares was elected attorney general in 2021 as part of the Republican ticket that saw Glenn Youngkin win the governor’s race and Winsome Earle-Sears elected the commonwealth’s lieutenant governor. The trio was swept into office on a wave of parental outrage over COVID lockdowns and leftist school boards trampling on parental rights.
Inauguration Day in Virginia will be Saturday, January 17, 2026.
