In a startling incident in Carson, California, a young child was attacked by a coyote right in his grandmother’s driveway—a moment that was captured on surveillance footage. The 4-year-old boy was standing near his mother’s car at his grandparents’ home when the unexpected encounter occurred.
The unsettling event unfolded on a Tuesday, as the child’s mother, Sarina Donohoo, was busy unloading supplies from the vehicle. The surveillance video reveals the shocking moment the coyote approached, grabbing the boy and pulling him to the ground.
“Suddenly, I heard him scream,” recounted Donohoo. “I turned around and screamed as well because I saw the coyote on top of him.” Her immediate reaction was to rush to her son’s aid, successfully managing to scoop him up and retreat into the house, causing the coyote to flee.
Reflecting on the frightening encounter, Donohoo expressed her fear, understanding how dire the situation could have become. “I was terrified,” she said. “My first thought was to get him away from the coyote and check if he was alright.”
“I was so scared because I know how bad it could have been,” she said. “My initial response was just I need to get him away and I need to see if he’s okay.”
The child, Solomon, who turned 4 in February, was not seriously injured. He was treated for superficial puncture wounds on one of his legs and on his torso.
The boy’s grandparents live near a school and say coyotes are frequently seen in the neighborhood.
“It hurts my heart that nothing has been done. That there are not protections in place,” said Stephanie Fields, Solomon’s grandmother.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is trying to locate the coyote involved in the incident.
A similar attack happened in Carson last year, when a 6-year-old boy was bitten by a coyote and hospitalized with injuries to his head and legs.
Donohoo said more needs to be done to protect residents.
“We’ve lived with my parents in the past. [The coyotes] been around for years and when we call for help, they’re saying they can’t do anything. I don’t understand why it takes something like this to happen, and thank God he wasn’t injured more,” she said.
