CANADIAN prime minister Justin Trudeau appeared to take a swipe at Donald Trump following the US hockey team’s loss – but the dig backfired.

Trudeau was in bullish mood as he reveled in the team’s success at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

Canada scored an overtime winner which meant they prevailed 3-2 and scooped its first ever 4 Nations Face-Off tournament title.

But, the contest took place against a backdrop of deteriorating relations between the US and Canada.

Trump wants to make Canada America’s 51st state and has threatened tariffs.

And, he’s frequently referred to Canadian prime minister Trudeau as “governor.”

Last night, Trudeau shared footage of him celebrating and he said: “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.”

But, he was criticized by some. One said:  “You don’t get a say, you ruined us.”

“Don’t most of the country hate this guy?” another chimed.

“Take that jersey off,” a third critic said.

Critics of Trudeau said they still “hated” the outgoing prime minister.

While others suggested that Trudeau’s post was written by artificial intelligence.

Fans of the US ice hockey team reminded Trudeau that Canada has not won a Stanley Cup since 1993.

American football supporters pointed out that all 59 Super Bowls have been hosted in the US.

In January, Trudeau announced his resignation after nine years at the helm.

But, his final months in office has been dominated by a war of words with Trump.

This has worsened relations between the US and Canada.

Just hours before the puck dropped in Massachusetts, Trump’s team doubled down on the president’s desire to add Canada to America’s Union.

“We look forward to the United States beating our soon-to-be 51st state Canada,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at Thursday’s briefing.

And Trump was excited about the contest.

“I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” he posted on Truth Social.

Trump didn’t attend the politically-charged hockey game, but referred to Trudeau as “governor” during a speech at Thursday’s Republican Governors Association meeting in Washington DC.

ANTHEM LYRICS ‘CHANGED’

Before the game got underway, Chantal Kreviazuk changed the lyrics to O Canada.

The anthem features the phrase “In all of us command” but Kreviazuk, sung “that only us command.”

Spectators booed the Canadian anthem – days after the Star Spangled Banner was jeered in Montreal.

Days after trooping back into the White House, Trump slapped 25% tariffs on imports from Canada.

Trump also hit Canadian energy with a 10% tariff but Ottawa responded with their own retaliatory measures.

Trudeau vehemently opposes Trump’s move to tariff warfare.

“It is going to have real consequences for people, for workers on both sides of our border. We dont want to be here,” he said.

Trump also clobbered Mexico with 25% tariffs, sparking a retaliatory response.

Last-ditch talks were held between Trump and Trudeau and the tariffs did not come into force.

The tariffs were delayed for 30 days, which means the threat still looms.

Ottawa is trying to stall Trump’s tariffs from coming into force.

Canada has listed cartels as terrorist organizations in what appears to be an effort to woo Trump.
