King Charles III of the United Kingdom addresses a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, April 28.
Earlier in the day, the king and queen were warmly received by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. During their meeting, the president spoke about the enduring ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.
“Standing here amidst the monuments dedicated to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, it might seem paradoxical to honor a British monarch as we approach the 250th anniversary of American Independence,” Trump remarked. “Yet, this tribute is fitting in every sense.”
“Long before America had its own nation or constitution, we were rooted in a culture, a character, and a set of principles,” Trump continued. “Even before declaring our Independence, Americans possessed a unique gift: moral courage, inspired by a small yet powerful Kingdom across the ocean.”
