CNN national correspondent Kristen Holmes has welcomed her second baby after a difficult year covering the 2024 presidential election.
Holmes gave birth to her daughter, Eleanor Ricky Gray, on Tuesday night in Washington DC.
This is Holmes’ second kid with her husband Noah Gray, who is the chief of communications for DC Fire and EMS.
The mom said she’s had a “grueling” and “exhausting” last year balancing her career, pregnancy, and raising her three-year-old son Eliot, according to People.
However, Holmes said it’s been “one of the most rewarding.”
“Seeing a campaign through from start to finish was one of my ultimate career goals,” she explained.
“But it was also incredibly important to me to grow my family and give Eliot a sibling, so I set out to do both.
“It was a lot of compartmentalization.”
Holmes covered Republican 2024 presidential hopefuls, meaning she spent a lot of hours covering Donald Trump’s campaign trail.
She told People she was in a new state nearly every day over the past year.
The journalist said she would wake up at 4 am, sometimes facing morning sickness, before getting on a flight at 6 am to cover a campaign rally before doing it all again the next day.
Holmes shared her gratefulness for her husband in the statement.
“All of this was only possible with the help and support of my incredibly patient husband and I’m constantly reminded how lucky I am to be able to pursue my career ambitions, as well as my dreams of building a family,” she said.
Eleanor Ricky is named after Holmes’ maternal grandmother and her husband’s dad, the family revealed.
“Our son Eliot, 3, is already in love with his new baby sister and can’t wait to take care of her,” Holmes said.
“Eliot meeting Eleanor was one of the sweetest encounters my husband and I have ever witnessed.
“He wanted to cover her in kisses and make sure she has everything she needed.”
Seeing a campaign through from start to finish was one of my ultimate career goals, but it was also incredibly important to me to grow my family and give Eliot a sibling, so I set out to do both. It was a lot of compartmentalization.”

Holmes has worked for CNN for over 12 years.
The Oklahoma native and her husband were married in September 2019, according to their wedding announcement in the New York Times.
The pair both worked for CNN at one time as Holmes worked as an on-air correspondent while Gray was a White House and political producer.
They first met in 2015 over the phone when Holmes worked as an on-air producer at the White House and Gray, a booking producer, called her about breaking news.
They met in person a year later while they were both covering the Trump campaign.
