Live updates: SNAP benefits in peril as shutdown persists; Obama to stump for Dems in VA, NJ

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a crucial source of federal food aid, faces a funding crisis as it is set to deplete its resources by Saturday amid the ongoing government shutdown.

In response, a federal judge on Friday mandated the use of emergency funds to sustain the program. President Trump has indicated his intention to comply with this order. However, a concrete plan has yet to be established, leaving over 40 million Americans who depend on SNAP for grocery support in a precarious position as the deadline looms.

Meanwhile, health care premiums are projected to increase following the start of open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act on Saturday. The absence of subsidies, which previously helped keep insurance costs manageable for low-income families, is expected to drive this spike. Democrats have been urging Republicans to extend these tax credits for weeks, offering their support for a temporary measure to reopen the government as a bargaining chip.

Amid these political and economic challenges, President Trump spent Saturday at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, with plans to attend a dinner hosted by MAGA Inc. later in the evening.

In contrast, former President Barack Obama is actively campaigning in Virginia and New Jersey, aiming to rally support for Democratic gubernatorial candidates Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey, ahead of the elections on Tuesday.

While stumping for Spanberger in Norfolk, Va., on Saturday afternoon, Obama railed against the Trump administration’s “lawlessness and recklessness and mean-spiritedness,” adding that candidates like the former Virginia representative are needed because politics are “in a pretty dark place right now.”

The former president is scheduled to give remarks supporting Sherrill in Newark, N.J., later Saturday evening.
