A dramatic scene unfolded on a bustling highway in Laredo, Texas, as first responders and passing drivers rushed to save lives after a plane crash on Tuesday evening. Social media footage captured the intense rescue efforts that led to the survival of five out of six passengers aboard the plane, which was engulfed in flames shortly after the crash. Tragically, one passenger did not survive.
The incident took place around 10:00 p.m. on State Highway Loop 20, situated on the eastern side of Laredo, according to WAVE News. The business jet, carrying six individuals, collided with the busy thoroughfare and burst into flames, resulting in one fatality.
Video footage shared by bystanders on social media showcased the heroic efforts that followed the crash. In the video, police officers and civilians can be seen scrambling to break through the cockpit windows and open the aircraft doors to rescue those trapped inside. Using tools like a shovel and a sledgehammer, they managed to gain access to the cabin and cockpit, successfully freeing five survivors.
The aircraft involved, a Cessna Citation Latitude twin-engine business jet, was just a few miles from the Texas-Mexico border when it went down. It was traveling from Los Cabos International Airport in Mexico to Austin, Texas. Data from FlightAware indicates the jet took off from Los Cabos International Airport at 6:19 p.m. on Tuesday.
Fortunately, the crash did not result in any injuries on the ground. The plane is owned by NetJets, a corporate business jet company based in Ohio. In response to the incident, NetJets released a statement confirming the involvement of one of their aircraft. They acknowledged reports of injuries and a fatality, emphasizing their focus on the safety and well-being of their crew, passengers, and their families. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been notified and is conducting an investigation. NetJets stated they are unable to comment further or speculate on the cause of the crash.
No injuries were reported on the ground because of the crash. The aircraft is owned by NetJets, an Ohio-based corporate business jet company. NetJets issued a statement regarding the accident that reads, “We can confirm a NetJets aircraft was involved in an accident. We have received reports of injuries and a fatality related to the accident and are working with local law enforcement to confirm details. Our immediate concern is for the well-being of our Crewmembers, our passengers, and their families during this time. The NTSB has been notified and is investigating. NetJets cannot comment further and will not speculate on the cause of this accident.”
A local news report by KGNS indicated Dr. Victor Trevino, the Mayor of Laredo, was at the scene of the crash at the time of the rescue and issued a statement shortly afterward saying:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones affected by the recent private jet crash,” the mayor expressed. “As Mayor, I understand the importance of allowing investigators to complete a thorough and objective review before drawing any conclusions. Aviation investigations take time, and it is important that we avoid speculation while the facts are being gathered.”
“I was at the scene and witnessed firsthand the professionalism, courage, and dedication of our first responders,” Trevino continued. “I want to thank our Police Department, Fire Department, EMS personnel, and all emergency responders for their swift actions in suppressing the fire, securing the area, and protecting the public. Their bravery and coordinated response under difficult circumstances were truly commendable.”
“Until more information is confirmed, our focus should remain on supporting those impacted, honoring those affected, and respecting the integrity of the ongoing investigation,” he concluded.
The accident is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
