The Senate is set to reconvene at the Capitol this Sunday, aiming to resolve the government shutdown that has now stretched into its 40th day. Despite a rare Saturday meeting, progress remains elusive as pressures continue to build.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) stated ahead of the weekend that lawmakers will keep working until an agreement is reached to reopen the government. The Senate might vote on Sunday afternoon if negotiators can finalize an agreement on the three-bill “minibus.”

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are advocating for a proposal to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits for another year.

The repercussions of the shutdown have become more severe lately. On Sunday, the Trump administration instructed states to reverse efforts to distribute Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to over 40 million Americans, a move tied to the ongoing shutdown.

Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated a decrease in air travel at numerous major airports, resulting in over 1,000 flight cancellations on Saturday, marking the second day in a row for such disruptions.

President Trump, meanwhile, is set to return from his Mar-a-Lago on Sunday with plans to attend the Washington Commanders-Detroit Lions NFL game in Landover, Md.

ESPN reported on Saturday that the president wants the Commanders to name their new stadium after him, and he is expected to discuss his wishes with the leader of the football team’s ownership group while at the game.
