An individual has been detained following an alleged attack on Representative Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) during a Friday evening gathering in Park City, Utah.
Christian Joel Young, aged 28, faces charges of aggravated burglary and assaulting a public official, as reported by the Associated Press (AP). The AP, referencing court documents, stated that Young was subsequently taken to the Summit County Jail.
Frost addressed the incident on Saturday, responding to a Variety report which claimed that a white man had struck him after expressing pride in his racial identity.
“Last night, I was attacked by someone at the Sundance Festival who told me Trump would have me deported before punching me,” Frost shared on the social platform X on Saturday. “He was shouting racist slurs as he drunkenly fled. The suspect was apprehended, and I am unharmed.”
At 29, Frost made history in 2022 as the first member of Generation Z to be elected to Congress. He was born in the United States.
“Last night, I was assaulted by a man at Sundance Festival who told me that Trump was going to deport me before he punched me in the face,” Frost wrote on the social platform X Saturday. “He was heard screaming racist remarks as he drunkenly ran off. The individual was arrested and I am okay.”
Frost, 29, was the first Generation Z member of Congress upon his election in 2022. He was born in the United States.
County Judge Richard Mrazik ordered that Young, who has a prior misdemeanor conviction, be held without bail on the grounds that he poses “a substantial danger” if released, according to the AP.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) wrote on X Saturday that he is “horrified” by the incident.
“Grateful that [Frost] is okay, but appalled that this terrifying assault took place. The perpetrator must be aggressively prosecuted,” Jeffries added. “Hate and political violence has no place in our country, and the entire House Democratic Caucus family stands with Maxwell.”
