A CONGRESSMAN has waded into the desperate fight over a USPS hub that customers say has been holding mail for weeks.
The top Mississippi political blasted the service after his constituents reported missing essential paperwork and packages.
Customers in Jackson are waiting furiously for answers over the delays as USPS leaders deploy senior leadership to tackle the backlog.
According to spokesperson James Stotts, the executives are “onsite” working with local management to come up with a solution, the Mississippi Free Press reported.
Representative Bennie Thompson, whose district covers most of Jackson, says his office has been flooded with complaints about the ongoing mess, reported Mississippi Free Press.
“I understand the frustrations these delays have caused, and I want to assure my constituents that I am actively engaged in addressing this issue,” Thompson, a Democrat, said in a media statement.
The postal problems first came to light last month, with locals sharing stories of missing mail.
“I haven’t even seen some bills I normally get around this time,” Jackson resident Faye Taylor told NBC local affiliate WLBT.
Thompson said USPS higher-ups assured him they were on the ground, working to resolve the chaos.
Officials say they’re throwing more overtime hours at the problem and prioritizing mail heading to affected ZIP codes.
“We look forward to reports of a strong service recovery in the near term,” Stotts said.
Thompson isn’t convinced the crisis is over just yet.
“Timely mail delivery is critical,” he warned.
“My office will continue to monitor this situation closely.”
The congressman stressed that delayed mail means trouble for people waiting on Social Security checks, prescriptions, and legal documents.
USPS insists mail-in voting won’t be affected in upcoming municipal elections.
“The Postal Service will fulfill our role in the electoral process,” Stotts said, urging voters to send ballots early.
A USPS election report claims a “robust and proven process” ensures ballots are handled properly.
What to do when mail is missing
Step 1: Check the Current Status
Before you begin your search, if your package or mail has tracking, check USPS Tracking to see its current status.
Step 2: Complete a Help Request Form
Complete the USPS online help request form before you start a missing mail search. Please use a desktop computer to submit your form.
Your request will be forwarded to your local Post Office facility to help locate any missing items.
Step 3: Submit a Missing Mail Search Request
If after 7 business days from when you submitted your online help request form your mail or package hasn’t arrived, submit a Missing Mail search request with the following information:
- Sender mailing address
- Recipient mailing address
- Size and type of container or envelope you used
- Identifying information such as your USPS Tracking number(s), the mailing date from your mailing receipt, or Click-N-Ship label receipt
- Description of the contents such as what it is and the brand, model, color, or size, if applicable
- Pictures that could help us recognize your item
Step 4: Start your missing mail search
Jackson’s postal woes come as former President Donald Trump weighs a drastic overhaul of USPS leadership.
Trump is considering axing the agency’s bipartisan board of governors and handing control to his Commerce Secretary pick, Howard Lutnick.
The proposed shake-up would put the entire Postal Service under a single Trump appointee.
For now, Jackson residents just want their mail to show up on time.
