Season Ticket Holder Gets Kicked Out of MLS Game for Wearing MAGA Hat, but Notice What Stadium Allows

As anyone who follows any major league sports can tell you, sports media is as left-wing, if not more horribly left-wing, as regular media. Most people watch sports to cheer on their favorite team and forget about things like politics for a while. But in recent years, it has been a never-ending parade of things such as BLM T-shirts, and not taking a stand to keep biological men out of women’s sports.

Party politics has also seeped into sports media. And it is not hard to figure out which side many in professional sports are cheering for.

It became clear very recently who Major League Soccer is rooting for, and as a born and bred St. Louisan, this one is personal. Recently, while attending a St. Louis City SC soccer match, Michael Weitzel, a season ticket holder for the five-year-old club, was escorted out of the stadium by security for…you know the drill…wearing a MAGA hat. Weitzel recorded himself being escorted out of the stadium, and the video has gone viral.

But it isn’t as easy as the video going viral, leading to a big dustup, and Weitzel getting allowed back into the stadium, MAGA hat and all. Let’s go to the official MLS fan Code of Conduct handbook, which says:

  • Displaying signs, symbols, images, using language or making gestures that are threatening, abusive, or discriminatory, including on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, ability, and/or sexual orientation
  • Displaying signs, symbols or images for commercial purposes or for electioneering, campaigning or advocating for or against any candidate, political party, legislative issue, or government action

So, according to the letter of the handbook, Weitzel was, in fact, in violation of the rule. However, there is a gargantuan “but” here. If you look at the opposite side of the stadium from where Weitzel’s season ticket holder seats are, well, looky there…look at all the pretty rainbow Pride flags waving in the breeze. Weitzel asks the security guard charged with bouncing him out of the stadium about the Pride flags. His response, “They’re pre-approved.” What does that mean?

On the way out of the stadium, the security guard says he is a Trump supporter, he is just enforcing stadium rules. You might venture a guess that the security guard is as annoyed by the fact that he has to do this as Weitzel is at being escorted out. At one point, Weitzel asks if he takes the hat off, can he stay for the remainder of the game? He is abruptly told by someone other than the security guard, “Nope, it’s too late. You’re outta here!”

Thanks to the owners of the St. Louis City SC club, we have another glaring example of liberal hypocrisy for all to see. So, let’s review, in St. Louis, a hopelessly blue city, you can wave Pride flags in the stadium all you want, but one guy wearing a MAGA hat? Nope, too dangerous. Two things that St. Louis City SC owners might want to realize now, before too many more people see the video: Pride flags, whether they like it or not, are just as political as MAGA hats. Number two: As basketball great Michael Jordan may have once said, “Republicans buy sneakers too.”

In this case, Republicans buy season tickets to St. Louis City SC matches, too, even this season with their less-than-stellar record. But maybe not for long.
