A MUM has told how she is finally getting married five months after her fiance was left in a coma.

Lee Burns, 41, had been to the Grand National with a group of friends for his stag do when he was punched outside a bar in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancs., in a near-fatal attack.

He was rushed to Royal Preston Hospital where it was discovered he had suffered a fractured skull and two bleeds on his brain.

The dad-of-three had a three hour operation, where surgeons removed part of his skull and brain to stop the two bleeds and ease pressure from swelling.

Lee was then placed in an induced coma which he woke up from ten days after the attack, which happened on April 16 this year.

He was due to marry his fiancee Sara Smith, 38, in May but the wedding had to be postponed because of Lee’s injuries.

Now, Lee and Sara will be tying the knot in an intimate ceremony next month at the Imperial Hotel in their hometown of Blackpool, Lancs.

Chuffed Sara, who feared they’d never get married, said: “We’re just ecstatic that we can get married now – happiness has taken over from the nerves.

“We’re just raring to go and ready to do it now.

“After everything we’ve been through, nothing else can make us as nervous, so we’re just so ready to get married.”

The pair, who have been together for ten years, were due to get married on May 13 but couldn’t because of Lee’s injuries.

Instead, they exchanged promise rings at a ceremony organised by staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Sara says the couple ‘didn’t think’ they would be able to have a proper wedding, but Lee recently underwent further surgery to have a titanium plate fitted in his skull.

But she says the couple, who got engaged in March 2022, are now able to ‘enjoy a bright future’ together.

She said: “The last six months have been the hardest time of my life, we both had to give up jobs we love and our world was totally changed.

“We always thought our wedding was just gone. We didn’t think we would be able to get married.

“But we are still together and have our family and that is all that matters.

“Things might of changed for us but being strong and positive together I know we will enjoy a bright future ahead.”

Lee said: “It just felt like our wedding was taken away from us. But now we’re back in control of it again and we can actually do it.

“We are now back in control of our wedding.”

A 33-year-old man has been charged with wounding without intent (Section 20).
