Assault on ICE Officers Sparks Outrage as Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey Faces Title 18 Charges on May 19, 2025

U.S. Attorney Alina Habba charged the U.S. Representative for New Jersey’s 10th District with assaulting law enforcement at an ICE facility in Newark.

Habba’s office accused McIver of violating Title 18, Section 111(a)(1), stressing accountability. Thus, the LaMonica McIver ICE clash ignited fierce debate over protecting law enforcement. Explore more on political scandals.

Incident Unfolds at Delaney Hall

McIver, two House Democrats, and Mayor Ras Baraka toured the new ICE facility on May 9, 2025, per The Independent.

Tensions escalated as officers arrested Baraka for trespassing. Nick Sortor’s X post shows body cam footage of McIver rushing officers arresting Baraka, making contact.

The video captures the alarming chaos outside the facility’s gates, notably showing the incident’s intensity.

Charges and Defenses Collide

Alina Habba’s statement detailed the charges, emphasizing that Rep. LaMonica McIver’s Assault on ICE Officers involved impeding and assaulting federal officers.

“No one is above the law,” Habba declared, a stance Kristi Noem echoed, after she praised the charges via X, noting the need to protect law enforcement.

McIver’s lawyer, Paul J. Fishman, called the prosecution “spectacularly inappropriate,” per AP News.

Still, the McIver charged assault officers case underscores the risks officers face during such encounters.

Political Fallout Intensifies

The congresswoman ICE detention charges have sparked sharp political reactions because of their implications.

Kristi Noem supports the charges, aligning with accountability calls. Meanwhile, Rep. Eric Swalwell criticized them, calling them a “red line” Trump crossed, per an X post on May 20, 2025.

The McIver Delaney Hall incident highlights tensions, as Newark’s immigrant community opposes Delaney Hall’s reopening, per the New Jersey Globe. Will law enforcement finally be protected from such interference, despite these political divides?
