After all the in-fighting and resignations, the Rwanda Bill has passed the Commons

Wheels up

TORY rebels may be furious — but they are not suicidal.

Siding with Labour to defeat Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda Bill last night might well have blown up his Government . . . so central is the deterrent to the PM’s crucial “stop the boats” mission.

That would have fired the starting gun on an early General Election which, on current polling, could see the Tories hammered and gift Labour power.

We agree the Bill is not perfect. But it remains the only viable plan to deter the illegal migration which enrages millions of voters.

Another 350 reportedly landed on small boats yesterday, for us to house and feed for the foreseeable future.

This scandal has to end — and Labour does not care enough to have formed a serious alternative to achieve that.

If the Tory rebels are right, the Government will now be bogged down in legal challenges from left-wing human rights lawyers acting for those facing the first deportations. Let’s see.

But their alternative was to harden the Bill so much it might never have passed, with hand-wringing Tory wets pulling their support.

Where would THAT have left the PM and his party? Nowhere.

After all the in-fighting and resignations, the Bill has passed the Commons.

Now ram it through the Lords, get planes in the air and this deterrent up and running.

Unfair fares

RAIL fares are exorbitant enough without ticket machines fleecing passengers yet further.

Especially when the Government seems determined to ensure those contraptions become our only option at stations, with ticket offices steadily consigned to the history books.

A Which? probe found prices were often more than double those on the Trainline website for the same journey.

The machines either did not offer the cheapest fares or buried them under a blizzard of on-screen options.

Which is the crux of the problem.

Tickets are not only far too expensive, the pricing structure is mind-boggling.

How a non-internet savvy pensioner is meant to avoid being ripped off is anyone’s guess.

Time to simplify it all . . . and ensure ticket machines ALWAYS prominently display the cheapest fare.

Get well soon

PRINCESS Kate’s op and her fortnight in hospital will be worrying for William and the family.

Likewise the King’s upcoming prostate surgery, though he is admirably stoic.

We commend him for being so open about it, to encourage older blokes to get theirs checked.

On behalf of The Sun and our readers: Get well soon, both of you.
