Oregon Governor Tina Kotek (D) has issued a stern warning regarding the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws by federal agents within the state, threatening potential legal action.
In an Instagram video, Kotek criticized the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for what she described as “violent actions” that incite fear under the guise of immigration enforcement. She emphasized that the state is prepared to “investigate misconduct” and ensure federal officers are held accountable for their actions.
“I share your commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring community safety,” Kotek stated. “We also cherish our status as a welcoming state, where immigrants and refugees contribute to our prosperity. The persistent aggressive actions by the DHS, targeting Oregonians and spreading fear under the banner of ‘immigration enforcement,’ are intolerable.”
She further criticized the use of “excessive force and reckless tactics,” stating these practices endanger both bystanders and law enforcement, which undermines public safety.
Governor Kotek assured that Oregon is vigilantly observing all activities by ICE, pledging to investigate any misconduct. “If a federal officer violates Oregon law, they will face consequences like anyone else. Reckless or unconstitutional actions will not be tolerated in our state,” she asserted.
During an interview with CBS News in October, Kotek accused federal agents of escalating situations with protesters in Portland, and called for them to “stand back and focus on de-escalating” situations.
“[T]his set of demonstrations that are happening are managed by local law enforcement, as they should be,” Kotek said at the time. “People have the right to lawfully protest, but if they cross the line, they are being held accountable. If criminal activity occurs, they are being held accountable. This is what free speech looks like, and I believe the federal government can continue to do the work right here.”
