MORE than 500 Walgreens pharmacies could shut down today as employees have threatened a walkout.

Pharmacists, technicians, and support staff are among the employees who are planning to walkout between today and Wednesday.

Walgreens employees have cited poor working conditions and constant workflow disruptions that have prevented them from properly treating patients as reasons for the walkouts, according to CNN.

In addition, some employees told CNN that the added focus on vaccinations has added to an already hefty workload that involves filling prescriptions and caring for customers.

While some stores may still remain open with a bare minimum of employees, other locations may shutter completely.

The number of staffers who will participate is unclear.

However, organizers of the walkout told CNN that more than 500 stores expressed interest in participating.

Walgreens operates about 9,000 locations across the country.

Employees at Walgreens don’t have a union leader to coordinate the walkouts.

So instead, organizers and employees have relied on social media and emails to plan.

Some Walgreens locations were listed as being temporarily closed on Monday morning, Reuters reported.

But the reason for those closures was not made clear.

When approached for comment, Walgreens provided The U.S. Sun with the following statement: “Our pharmacy teams work tirelessly to serve our communities — from administering life-saving vaccines, to helping patients receive prescriptions and health screenings — especially this time of year, during which we see some of the highest rates of respiratory illnesses and seasonal vaccinations.

“The last few years have required an unprecedented effort from our team members, and we share their pride in this work — while recognizing it has been a very challenging time.

“We understand the immense pressures felt across the U.S. in retail pharmacy right now. We are engaged and listening to the concerns raised by some of our team members.

“We are committed to ensuring that our entire pharmacy team has the support and resources necessary to continue to provide the best care to our patients while taking care of their own wellbeing.

“We are making significant investments in pharmacist wages and hiring bonuses to attract/retain talent in harder-to-staff locations.”

Meanwhile, CVS pharmacists in the Kansas City area walked out in September.

As many as 22 locations were affected by walkouts planned over a two-week span, CNN reported.

The walkouts prompted company executives to meet with staff and reassure employees that changes are on the horizon, including overtime pay and more support.
