After a spectacular performance in Monday’s qualifying event in Roswell, Ga., Matt McCarty, a former Santa Clara men’s golfer, will compete in the 2022 United Open Championship.
With three holes to go and night coming, the Scottsdale, Ariz., product appeared to be on the outside looking for one of the four available qualifying slots.
In addition, Patton Kizzire and Erik Barnes led by two strokes for third and fourth, respectively.
On the other hand, McCarty threw a wrench into the proceedings by birdieing two of the three holes and necessitating a playoff.
Once he reached the playoffs, McCarty only needed one hole to punch his ticket to one of the game’s most famous events.
McCarty, a two-time All-WCC selection during his tenure with the Broncos, made a birdie on the first playoff hole despite absolute darkness.
With a birdie, Barnes followed suit, but Kizzire could only make par, leaving him as the odd man out.
