President Trump on Wednesday conducted a ceremonial swearing in for Jeanine Pirro, who vowed to return Washington, D.C., to a “shining city on a hill” in her role as the District’s top prosecutor.

Trump selected Pirro to serve as U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., after his initial pick, Ed Martin, saw his nomination run into GOP opposition over his previous comments about the 2021 attack on the Capitol.

During Wednesday’s ceremony in the Oval Office, Trump noted he’s known Pirro “for a long time.”

“Over five decades, Jeanine Pirro, known by millions as ‘Judge Jeanine,’ has devoted her life to the pursuit of justice, the defense of freedom, and the fair, equal and impartial rule of law. And that’s what she’s about,” Trump said.

Pirro, who was joined by family members and Attorney General Pam Bondi, spoke about her career as a prosecutor and praised Trump as one of her “earliest supporters and champions.”

“Today, Mr. President, you bring me back to my roots. And it is a larger arena, but no less an arena where we need justice. Where we need to send a message that justice will be honored in the District of Columbia,” Pirro said.

Pirro has already been tasked with prosecuting the case of a man accused of fatally shooting two Israeli Embassy employees in Washington, D.C., last week. She said Wednesday the incident “will not go without just accounting.”

Pirro is a former judge and prosecutor who was elected multiple times to serve as district attorney for Westchester County in New York. She will serve as the interim U.S. attorney for the District, though she will require Senate confirmation to take on the role full-time.

She most recently worked as a Fox News host who appeared regularly on “The Five,” a panel-style show that discusses the day’s news. Pirro had been a fixture at the network for nearly two decades.

Pirro has been sharply critical of Democrats, top media figures and others who Trump and his allies regularly argue have “weaponized” the Justice Department against him. She is the latest individual to transition from the Fox News airwaves to the Trump administration, joining Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
