Sunday shows preview: Government shutdown lingers as Dems, GOP fight for way out

The ongoing government shutdown has reached a historic milestone, marking 38 days of federal inactivity and setting a new record as the longest shutdown in U.S. history. This surpasses the previous record set during President Trump’s first term in office.

In Washington, lawmakers find themselves at an impasse, locked in a stalemate over a House-authored continuing resolution (CR). Senate Democrats have consistently blocked the resolution 14 times, resisting efforts to pass it. Despite the gridlock, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has affirmed that the Senate will continue to meet until a resolution is found.

The crux of the deadlock lies in the Senate’s filibuster rule, which demands a 60-vote threshold to pass legislation. The minority party has seized upon this rule to thwart the CR, aiming to secure an extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium subsidies for at least a year as a bargaining chip.

Republican senators argue that discussions about the ACA should be deferred until after the government resumes operations, creating a deadlock that persists as neither side shows signs of backing down. President Trump has urged his fellow Republicans to abolish the filibuster, a move Senate Majority Leader Thune opposes.

In a fervent message on Truth Social, the president stated, “Whether we make a Deal or not, THE REPUBLICANS MUST ‘BLOW UP’ THE FILIBUSTER, AND APPROVE HUNDREDS OF LONG SOUGHT, BUT NEVER GOTTEN, POLICY WINS LIKE, AS JUST A SMALL EXAMPLE, VOTER ID (IDENTIFICATION).” This stance underscores his determination to push through longstanding policy goals.

“Only a LOSER would not agree to doing this!”

Several ideas have been tossed around by Republicans to end the stalemate, including Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) proposed bill that seeks to lower rising health care costs.

Graham is scheduled to make an appearance on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” and could share more about his plan to move negotiations forward in the upper chamber.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) will also share his perspective during the show.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) is expected to appear on “Fox News Sunday” and can speak to the dialogue within the Republican conference as polls show Americans blaming the GOP for the federal shutdown. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) could do the same for the Democratic conference during his Sunday appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Amid the funding impasse, it’s unclear when Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds, also known as food stamps, will be distributed after the Supreme Court temporarily halted a lower court order requiring the Trump administration make full November payments.

Travelers have also been forced to deal with flight delays and cancellations as air traffic controllers begin to call out after missing weeks of pay. More than 1,000 flights across the country were canceled as of Friday morning, as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and airlines look to deal with staffing shortages exacerbated by the shutdown.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will appear on “Fox News Sunday” and CNN’s “State of the Union,” where he could speak to the state of air travel after the FAA announced an initial flight reduction of 4 percent at 40 major airports starting on Friday. The decrease could eventually increase to 10 percent if the shutdown drags on until Nov. 14.

And while the shutdown drags on, Democrats are celebrating election wins in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and elsewhere after voters turned out for the party on Tuesday to elect Zohran Mamdani (D) mayor of New York City, Rep. Mikie Sherrill governor of New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger governor of Virginia. The two governors-elect are both set to appear Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

Exit polls showed affordability was a top priority for those casting ballots.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin, who is slated to appear on “Fox News Sunday,” has shared hopes to build on the momentum heading into next year’s midterm elections.

“When I ran for chair, I promised to get the DNC out of DC and invest in the people and state parties doing the work on the ground,” Martin wrote in a Tuesday post on the social platform X. “Last night’s victories are a testament to what our party can do when we come together, reconnect with voters, and organize.”
