Tracy Morgan has returned to collaborate with the creative geniuses behind 30 Rock, and he’s thrilled about this reunion.
The celebrated comedian, now 57, stars in a new NBC comedy titled The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins. This series reunites Morgan with Robert Carlock, Sam Means, and Tina Fey, the team that crafted 30 Rock, where Morgan famously portrayed the quirky yet endearing Tracy Jordan. In his latest role, Morgan embodies Reggie Dinkins, a former NFL star who faces a league ban for betting on his own games—an attempt, in his mind, to boost his performance.
Viewers tuning into Reggie Dinkins can expect a hearty dose of humor along with a nostalgic vibe reminiscent of the charm that made Tracy Jordan so beloved. This is a tribute to the remarkable synergy between Morgan and the talented writers.
“With Tina, Sam, and Robert, I feel one word: safe. They understand my voice and share my innate sense of humor,” Morgan shared with DECIDER in a recent interview. “Being back with them feels like being back in the 30 Rock groove.”
While it captures some of the essence of 30 Rock, this series introduces a fresh storyline and a cast of new faces. Joining Morgan is Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Arthur Tobin, a filmmaker documenting Reggie’s journey to reclaim his reputation after his fall from grace in the sports world.
Also along for the ride is Erika Alexander as Monica, Reggie’s ex-wife who is also still his agent and business manager, as well as Precious Way who stars as Reggie’s fiancée Brina, Jalyn Hall as Reggie and Monica’s son Carmelo, and SNL alum Bobby Moynihan as Rusty, Reggie’s best friend and former teammate.
Morgan said that while the expectations from fans of his last collab with Fey, Carlock, and Means are high, his only aim is to provide fans who find The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins with the same kind of laughs he grew up with on television. If he can find the funny with this team and with the producers who he trusts implicity, he’s hopeful the success will come again.
“I want people to laugh. I just want people to put their phones away for 20 minutes and see some good old-fashioned TV, like I did watching Archie Bunker and Good Times,” he explained. “And, my god, I won. That’s my feeling. That’s why I went back. I’ve done good work in the past with Tina, Robert, and Sam and I love it.”
“Hopefully, I’ll pray for it, that the lightning strikes twice in the same place,” Morgan said.
