SOCIALITE Rebecca Grossman has been found guilty of the murder of two boys she struck down during a street race after prosecutors debunked her story.
A Los Angeles County jury deliberated on Friday and returned a guilty verdict for Grossman following her striking and killing, Mark, 11, and Jacob, 8, during a street race with her ex-boyfriend.
The murder trial for Grossman, 60, began in January with prosecutors asserting that the socialite and her ex-boyfriend, former MLB pitcher Scott Erickson, were racing two separate cars at high speeds following an alcohol-filled lunch.
The socialite’s defense team argued that Erickson was the one who killed the children, despite witnesses identifying Grossman.
They alleged that the boys were struck by Erickson’s car first before their bodies were flung toward Grossman’s vehicle.
In a strange turn, Grossman’s defense attorney Tony Buzbee started asking several witnesses whether they saw a 6-foot-4, 250-pound man hiding in the bushes – a description that fits Erickson.
A confused Deputy Cody Gaudet responded that there weren’t many bushes in the area of the crash, and a bystander would have been noticeable.
“That would be a concern if we had,” he said.
No witnesses reported seeing a figure who matched Erickson’s description.
Deputy District Attorney Ryan Gould slammed Grossman’s “ridiculous” story in his closing statement on Friday, reported CBS.
He explained that there was “not a shred of evidence” to show that Erickson struck the children first, making the claim a “ridiculous theory.”
Grossman’s attorney stood resolute in his statement to the jury.
“I think we now have seen she ain’t guilty of anything,” Buzbee told the jury.
They did not agree with his ardent words.
Gould’s words ultimately pulled the jury to the side of the prosecution as he described Grossman as “driving too fast,” “[knowing] that speed kills” and being “impaired.”
He went on to divulge that the socialite had lied at the time of the incident, understating how many alcoholic drinks she had consumed.
According to “black box” data from her vehicle, the boys were struck at the speed of 73 miles per hour on a 45-mile-per-hour street.
Mother to the two boys, Nancy Iskander sobbed during her court testimony as she described how her sons were hit by the car while crossing the street on September 29, 2020.
Nancy was a first-hand witness to her son’s traumatic deaths, having been able to save only her five-year-old son before Grossman plowed down her other children.
“I care about my kids… and I know who killed them,” she cried in court.
“Her car ran them over. I know that she killed them, I know. Please try to understand,” she said in response to Grossman’s claim that her then-boyfriend was to blame.
Grossman’s defense claimed that Erickson’s car threw the boys’ bodies into the air and her car, but Nancy recounted it differently.
“I wouldn’t have missed that, Mark going up in the sky,” she said.
Following the verdict announcement, Nancy and the boys’ father Mark said that the closure after a three-year wait was welcomed, reported NBC4.
“Mark and Jacob did not die. They were murdered,” said Nancy.
Despite the hurt Grossman has brought the family, the grieving mother still felt empathetic for her son’s killer and Grossman’s family after seeing them say goodbye in court.
“I don’t have any hate for her. My heart broke for her children,” Nancy said.
“I’m a mother.”
