In a recent development out of Lebanon, Virginia, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office has taken decisive action following the discovery of three stolen vehicles, resulting in the arrest of Ernest Scott Barton, a 48-year-old resident of Salem, Virginia. The arrest took place on a Saturday, as detailed in an official statement from the sheriff’s office.

The series of events leading to Barton’s arrest began when authorities received a report about a vehicle stolen from Abingdon. This vehicle was subsequently found on New Garden Road, prompting the sheriff’s office to deploy deputies to the scene.

Further investigations unfolded when deputies responded to a crash in Cleveland. Upon arrival, they uncovered that one of the vehicles involved in the incident was stolen from the Lebanon area. In a subsequent search, deputies discovered an additional vehicle that had also been taken from the same vicinity.

The Russell County Sheriff’s Office, in their release, confirmed that through their investigative efforts, they established a connection between all three stolen vehicles and the suspect, Ernest Scott Barton.

“Upon investigation it was determined that all three vehicles were connected to the same suspect,” the sheriff’s office said in the release.

The third vehicle was found at a home in the Belfast area. Barton was also found at the property and arrested, according to the sheriff’s office.

Barton was charged with:

  • Two counts of larceny of a vehicle
  • One count of grand larceny of tools etc.
  • One count of attempt to break and enter
  • One count of buying and receiving stolen property
  • One count of grand larceny with the intent to sell or distribute stolen property.

Barton is being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon, according to the release. He has a pending court date in Russell County General District Court.
