A driver whose automobile collided with the Chinese consulate in San Francisco on Monday was fatally shot by US police. Earlier this week, a car slammed into the Chinese consulate in San Francisco, stopping in the lobby and causing a chaotic scene that resulted in police shooting the driver, who subsequently passed away at the hospital, according to officials. After 3 p.m., police responded to a report of a car slamming into the consulate building and cautioned the public to stay away from the scene. During a brief press conference, police Sgt. Kathryn Winters claimed that once officers entered the visa office’s lobby and made contact with the suspect, the driver was shot by officers.

Even though “life-saving efforts” were made, the suspect was declared dead at the hospital, according to police. The visa office was struck by a Honda sedan as it was being broadcast on television, and the building’s front doors were blocked off. Winters claimed there were no reports of any other injuries, but added that they did not know why the car struck the structure or how many people were inside at the time. Investigators from the US Department of State and the Chinese consulate are collaborating with police. Winters answered, “I wish I could tell you more, but this is a very complicated case.

The Chinese consulate general condemned the event on Monday in a statement. “On the afternoon of October 9, 2023, local time, a person who remains unknown drove a vehicle and violently crashed into the application hall of our consulate, posing a serious threat to the security of staff and people on site, and damaging the facilities of our consulate,” the statement read. “This violent attack is strongly condemned by our embassy.” The embassy claimed to have asked for additional information on the incident and requested that it be “treated seriously by the law.” The city’s Japantown suburb is across from the People’s Republic of China Consulate General, which is located on a busy roadway.
