Sanctuary County in North Carolina Releases Jail Inmate Accused of Child Rape

Authorities in North Carolina have come under scrutiny for releasing an undocumented immigrant accused of a serious crime involving a minor, as reported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Recently, officials in Mecklenburg County, known for its sanctuary policy of non-cooperation with ICE, detained Arnol De Jesus Guevara-Lopez. He faces charges including statutory rape of a child under 15 and taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Despite a request from ICE to hand over Guevara-Lopez to federal authorities, Mecklenburg County officials declined, allowing him to return to the community. Following his release, Guevara-Lopez was taken back into custody for not adhering to bond conditions.

“These are the individuals that North Carolina’s sanctuary policies are shielding from immigration enforcement, releasing them into our neighborhoods where they can target American children,” stated Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security.

In response, ICE has filed another detainer for Guevara-Lopez to prevent his release into the community once more.

“This is a perfect example of why sanctuary policies make Americans less safe,” McLaughlin said. “We are calling on Charlotte sanctuary politicians to commit to turning this child rapist over to ICE, so he can never walk American streets again. Sanctuary politicians must stop releasing pedophiles and rapists into our neighborhoods.”
