Prince William’s appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday was a striking display of easy, good-humoured royal charm. Relaxed, witty and approachable, while looking especially polished, he appeared completely at ease as he won over his fellow guests and the studio audience.
It also offered a sharp contrast to the downbeat interview Prince Harry gave to GQ earlier in the week. Speaking about his hopes of repairing relations with his family, Harry struck a pessimistic note, saying that “some people don’t want it to work out”.
William should, by rights, have enjoyed a clear public-relations victory. Despite his brother’s comments that his resemblance to their mother has diminished, there were unmistakable flashes of Diana’s warmth and playful spirit in his performance. Yet the moment was quickly overshadowed by fresh and deeply serious claims involving Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle Sr. Once again, attention has shifted away from Prince William and towards another major Sussex family controversy.
This time, however, the Sussexes were not responsible for bringing the story into the public domain. The allegations came from Thomas Markle Jr, Meghan’s half-brother, who said he discovered disturbing images involving young girls on a computer at his father’s property in Cebu, Philippines.
Thomas Markle Sr has strongly denied the claims. Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha Markle, has also rejected them and accused her brother of being motivated by the prospect of earning money from the media. She suggested that, because the computers had reportedly been in storage for two years, the material could have been placed there during that time.
Samantha has described her brother in deeply unflattering terms, pointing to his previous arrests, including an allegation that he held a gun to his girlfriend’s head during an argument while drunk. Those claims have also been reported in the past. Taken together, the Markle family’s history has done little to make an already troubling situation easier to understand.
William’s Graham Norton appearance should have been a triumph, says Sarah Vine. Instead, public attention has turned to another deeply troubling Sussex family controversy
For the Sussexes, the situation is even more complicated and painful when viewed alongside the continuing saga surrounding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor
The situation became still more complex after Meghan issued a statement saying that, around the time of her wedding, a letter containing “troubling and disturbing allegations” had been sent to the Metropolitan Police and its royal protection unit. She said the letter was later passed to her and Prince Harry, while the Met has confirmed receiving it.
Meghan also criticised sections of the Press for questioning her decision to cut contact with her father. “I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father… was for one reason: to protect them [her children],” she said.
Some commentators have noted that Meghan later described herself as “a Daddy’s Girl” in the 2022 Netflix documentary about her and Harry, arguing that the two accounts appear difficult to reconcile. Even so, given the seriousness of the allegations, it is reasonable to approach her explanation with empathy. Claims involving child sexual abuse are among the most disturbing a family can confront.
No charges have been brought against Thomas Markle Sr in connection with the allegations. Nevertheless, the suggestion that he could be linked to such claims is horrifying. It remains unclear who sent the letter to police—it may have been anonymous—but receiving news of that nature about a parent must have been profoundly distressing for Meghan.

Even an unsubstantiated suggestion of this kind can generate intense speculation and damaging theories. That uncertainty can deepen the anguish not only for the person accused, but also for relatives and anyone else caught up in the fallout.
I understand something of that impact after recently facing the consequences of a comparable accusation. My former husband’s ex-partner was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service with possessing Category B and C images of children, allegations she denies. She had met both of my children, and my daughter had even babysat for her, while she has a young child of her own. I was blindsided when the charges emerged a few weeks ago, and I am still trying to process the distressing circumstances.
Telling my children was among the most painful responsibilities I have faced as a parent. So too was accepting that something so toxic could come close to my family and disrupt our sense of safety.
For Meghan, this is her father. The possibility that the man who played such an important role in her early life could have a deeply troubling side must be almost impossible to absorb
In my case, the person at the centre of the allegations was not a blood relative. For the Sussexes—and, by extension, the wider Royal Family—the implications are far more complicated and painful, particularly against the backdrop of the continuing controversy involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who has faced no criminal charges but has nevertheless lost his public roles and royal status.
The prospect of one person facing allegations of this kind within a family is devastating. The presence of a second, separate case would be almost impossible to comprehend.
For Meghan, the issue is intensely personal: Thomas Markle is her father, a man she has spoken about warmly over many years, including in interviews and on her former lifestyle website, The Tig. She has credited him with working tirelessly and making major financial sacrifices to support her education. She has also recalled his encouragement and described how his experience as a Hollywood lighting engineer helped him support her ambitions as an actress.
The idea that this deeply influential figure might have a hidden and troubling side would be extraordinarily difficult to accept. The pain would extend beyond the nature of the allegations themselves: discovering that someone once loved and trusted may not be who you believed can undermine a person’s entire understanding of their past. The emotional consequences for Meghan and the wider family are impossible to predict.
In the past, it’s fair to say that the Sussexes have at times exaggerated the hardships they have faced. But there is no doubt in my mind that this is a genuine trauma. While you can forgive someone for making a fool of themselves by saying stupid things to the Press, or acting like an idiot for the cameras, what Thomas Sr now stands accused of is unforgivable.
I only hope for all their sakes that what Meghan’s half-sister says is true, and that all this really is just a nasty lie made up by a twisted son to punish his sick father for cutting him off financially.
Either way, in the end the truth always comes out.
