'Fight the Trump Takeover' Protests on Saturday Over TX Redistricting, D.C. Safety Issues Fall Flat

The Texas Democrats who fled their state to break quorum to prevent a redistricting plan from passing the state legislature are reportedly returning to Texas on Monday.

They’re taking this weekend to get some final whining in.

“It’s been really hard for the members to stay away from Texas, from their jobs, from their kids and families,” said state Rep. Vikki Goodwin, who’s also running for the lieutenant governor seat in 2026. “It’s also very expensive with the $500 a day fine. So some members just felt like we can make a commitment for one session quorum break, but we really can’t do it indefinitely.”

Texas state Rep. John Bucy was upset he didn’t get to take his daughter to her first day of kindergarten. He rationalized it this way:

They “don’t get it today,” Bucy said of his two daughters during an interview with the Tribune in downtown Chicago. “And my (older) daughter seems a little frustrated with me, but one day she’s going to — 10 years from now, she’s going to read about this, and they’re going to study Donald Trump’s authoritarian power grab. And I hope there’s some mention that her dad fought back, and I think that will matter more than missing her first day of school.”

I’m sorry, but that’s just funny. Any fines or other personal loss is on them – they chose to flee and throw a tantrum. The only thing that history will say, if it says anything at all about them, is that they lost after throwing that tantrum. They achieved nothing.

They are now seeking to recast this as a victory by arguing that California Gov. Gavin Newsom is pushing to change the maps there. That shows their hypocrisy – it’s cool to them if Newsom tries to change things in his state to work around the independent commission that’s in place.

They’re also involved in protests on Saturday. There was a “Fight the Trump Takeover” protest supposedly happening in about 30 cities over a variety of issues, including Texas redistricting and Trump’s effort to deal with D.C. crime. I surveyed places that were supposed to have protests. The only cities I saw that had any real number of people were Austin, Texas; Washington, D.C.; and Chicago, Illinois. When I say “real,” Austin had, according to one local station, “hundreds.” One estimate had D.C. at 1,500 at one point. That’s not a lot.

Texas state Rep. Gene Wu was out in Chicago:

I’m sure that the drag artist being involved will help:

And if he doesn’t make it happen, then there’s always Beto O’Rourke cursing that should do the trick.

Warning for graphic language:

If your party’s loudest and silliest voice is the guy who keeps losing, you may have a problem. Beto hilariously claims (at about 2:00 in the clip) that if Republicans lose power, the Dems will have the “opportunity to hold free and fair elections in this country once again.” Ding, ding, ding, election denialism! It’s only unfair when Democrats lose, I guess. He claimed they aren’t “going to bend the knee.” Just run away like cowards who can’t handle losing democratically. “Whatever the f***ing maps are, we are going to win them in this state.” Because you have such a record of winning. Not.

Then there was the D.C. protest, which focused on Trump’s anti-crime actions, deploying federal agents and the National Guard to the capital city. The protesters chanted “Free D.C.,” which is actually what Trump is trying to do – free them from crime and violence.

The protesters also heckled the National Guard. One leftist even called them, “Class traitors!” Meanwhile, National Guard members are part of the military who protect all of us. And these characters treat them this way.

The funniest moment of the day was this speaker n D.C., who insisted that “there are many more of us than there are of them.”

No, there aren’t. 77 million voted for Trump. Meanwhile, you guys have a pitiful showing of radicals. If this was supposed to draw out the resistance, it didn’t draw out much.

The speaker said they had to direct all that to the only thing that measured up to the existential threat to humanity. “The whole Trump fascist regime must be driven from power!” she ranted. The crowd cheered. That sounds a bit insurrection-y – how do they intend to do that? They’re mostly just bull. And it’s, again, funny – they’re “fighting” that something is being done about crime. How crazy do you have to be to do that?

This is where Democrats are, and it’s wild to see them keep sinking themselves like this.
