ITALY is facing deadly floods with bridges crumbling under torrential downpours and the streets of Sicily turning to rivers.

At least one person has been killed after he was dragged to his death into a fast-flowing river as the Brit holiday hotspot braces for more dangerous weather.

Matteo Ciurca, 40, was swept away by the Crisa River in Leonforte as he went to feed his dogs.

Leonforte’s mayor Piero Livolsi said his death was due to a “water bomb” tearing through the region.

Two people even had to clamber out of their car windows and jump onto the roof to avoid being swept away in the same river on Tuesday.

One of the worst hit areas was Randazzo after heavy downpours left cars swamped under waves of floodwaters.

The San Giuliano bridge was left collapsing in the region earlier in the week leaving vehicles stranded and debris crashing across the roads.

Many of the 8,000 terrified locals in Randazzo were made to wade through the knee-high water to escape being caught up in the storm.

Much of Italy is battling with the adverse weather as the situation in the north and parts of the centre of the country hit the worst.

Venice has been hit hardest by floods with the municipalities of Spinea, Mirano, Mestre and Marghera all being left at a standstill due to the weather.

Dozens of underpasses have been left filled with water leaving heavy traffic with many civilians choosing to dump their cars and escape.

In the south of Milan, water levels have reached above 40cm.

Firefighters have been deployed to help clear basements and help barricade up low-level homes to avoid any serious water damage.

The city of Viterbo was hit by a powerful storm which brought with it hail, torrential rain and strong winds.

A number of power outages were altered across the city.

Sardinia saw five people, including a young girl, rescued by the Oristano Coast Guard in the sea off Pistis after their boat was hit by wind and rainstorms.

Authorities across the country have declared an orange alert for high risk in five separate regions as of this afternoon.

It comes as temperatures plummeted to a lowly 22C.

Flash flooding has constantly struck Italy this summer after terrifying footage from July showed water ripping through towns in the northwest.

Churning black water was seen surging down the Frejus – a tunnel connecting France and Italy.

Torrential rain caused the waterway to break its banks, unleashing a violent flood across the region.

Rescuers are seen looking on helplessly as entire streets are submerged in the muddy floodwaters.

One person died as at least 10 people trapped in buildings by the floods had to be rescued.

And it isn’t just Italy facing floods as last month southern Spain was left partially underwater.

Murcia, the region around Benidorm, was lashed by wild weather just two weeks after thunderstorms hit the country and swept away two people.

Towns southwest of the city were the hardest hit as several homes were evacuated and some 90 litres of rain fell per square metre in the worst regions.
