A massive explosion rocked the Valero refinery in Port Arthur on Monday, sending a towering plume of black smoke over the city and prompting a swift emergency response throughout Jefferson County. Investigators are currently working to determine what triggered the blast.

The explosion occurred just after midday within the extensive Gulf Coast facility, causing tremors in nearby neighborhoods. In response, officials urged residents to stay indoors while fire crews and industrial hazmat teams rushed to manage the situation. The resulting thick smoke column was visible for miles across Southeast Texas, drawing increased attention to one of the nation’s largest refining hubs as authorities investigated the explosion’s cause and assessed any potential dangers.

A spokesperson for the Port Arthur Fire Department informed 12News NBC that the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire remains undetermined. Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens reported that, fortunately, no injuries were sustained and evacuation orders were not necessary.

Following the blast, local officials swiftly alerted residents. “Residents on the west side of town are advised to shelter in place after the explosion,” announced the Port Arthur police. The advisory was soon expanded to include residents in Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, and areas south of Highway 73, urging them to remain indoors. Authorities confirmed the absence of immediate injuries and assured the public that “air quality and fire response are underway” as crews worked diligently to manage the incident.

Port Arthur city officials issued a shelter-in-place directive for residents in Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, and areas south of Highway 73, extending from Stirlwell Boulevard westward.
