THE migration crisis at the southern border marks a disturbing dereliction of Joe Biden’s presidential responsibilities, a rival Democratic candidate has told The U.S. Sun.
Jason Palmer, the youngest Democrat in the race at age 52, said the border needs to be modernized and revealed he would implement a more humane version of Remain in Mexico.
“The southern border is a national disaster,” Palmer said.
“Our communities are strained and the situation is neither humane nor secure.
“It shows a disturbing dereliction of presidential duty.”
Migrant encounters at the US-Mexico border reached almost 250,000 in December, per government data.
The figure was the highest monthly number on record.
Republicans have blamed Biden for the border crisis, and immigration will be among the top issues when voters go to the polls in November.
Despite the criticism, Biden is the clear frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.
But longshot candidate Palmer has revealed how he would tackle the crisis if he was elected commander in chief.
“We need to modernize our southern border and surge not just for border control agents,” he said.
He has called for hundreds more asylum judges to be added.
Palmer called on officials to process cases at a much faster pace.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services say a decision on asylum applications should be made within 180 days.
“It makes no sense to catch and release people who come across the border claiming asylum. All cases need to be processed within one week,” he said.
But, modernizing the border wouldn’t be an easy task, according to the entrepreneur.
“It requires implementing a variety of ideas to dramatically improve asylum processing such as safe mobility offices for migrants in third countries,” he said.
Palmer also urged government officials to collaborate with other nations and use their voices on the international stage to establish the root causes of migration.
