The latest Netflix documentary, UNTOLD: The Death and Life of Lamar Odom, delves into the life of former NBA star Lamar Odom, exploring his ascent to fame, his tumultuous marriage to reality TV star Khloe Kardashian, and his struggles with substance abuse. The film features candid interviews with Odom, Kardashian, NBA player Ron Artest, and Odom’s children, all recounting the harrowing incident in 2015 when Odom suffered a drug overdose at a Nevada brothel, leaving him in a coma for three days.

Khloe Kardashian offers an unfiltered glimpse into her marriage with Odom, revealing the dynamics away from the public eye. The couple’s whirlwind romance began with a wedding on September 27, 2009, just a month after they first met. Despite their apparent deep connection, the documentary suggests that Odom’s swift commitment may have been driven by a desire to align himself with the Kardashian celebrity lifestyle. Odom admits in UNTOLD, “this is where I want to be,” upon witnessing the allure of their world.

As their marriage progressed, Odom started indulging in partying and cocaine use. Kardashian reflects that, initially, his drug use appeared manageable, but it soon escalated. The situation deteriorated significantly after Odom was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in December 2011. During this time, Kardashian describes a constant struggle to prevent his behavior from becoming public, admitting she was, “fighting every single day,” and endured sleepless nights.

Encouraged to intervene, Kardashian confronted Odom in July 2015, five years and ten months into their marriage, demanding he enter a three-month rehab program or face divorce. Odom chose divorce and subsequently traveled to Nevada, where brothels are legal. On October 10, 2015, he checked into the Love Ranch brothel, only to be found unresponsive three days later.

The title UNTOLD: The Death and Life of Lamar Odom might be slightly misleading as Odom was never legally declared dead, though he was critically close to it. The overdose, caused by a mix of gas station sexual performance enhancers and cocaine, led to Odom suffering 12 strokes and six heart attacks.

When Odom suffered the near fatal overdose, his divorce from Kardashian was still pending due to a backlog in the courts. Kardashian took responsibility as Odom’s healthcare proxy and made medical decisions for him while he was in a coma. After his discharge from the hospital, Kardashian continued efforts to rehabilitate Odom until she discovered him using crack again in the bedroom of the home she had rented for him. She filed for divorce again on May 26, 2016.
