FEDERAL police have arrested a suspect in a robbery after tracking him down by one colorful accessory, caught in surveillance video of the crime.
Even police investigators struggled to identify this telling detail until an anonymous tipster helped solve the puzzle.
The suspect was arrested on Wednesday after more than a year of investigations by local and federal police.
Three masked men robbed a tobacco shop in Queens, New York on September 14, 2022, in what was an unsolved crime until now.
The thieves pointed guns at the employees and patrons of the shop while demanding that they hand over their phones and other valuables, according to a legal complaint reviewed by the Associated Press.
The thieves also took expensive merchandise from the store shelves.
The men then fled the scene in a Mazda, but not before leaving behind one important clue.

Would you think to track down a criminal by their underwear?
Luckily for New York, one good samaritan did.
After police shared some of the surveillance footage with the public in hopes of identifying the criminals, an anonymous tip came in with the link to an Instagram account.
The tipster said that they believed that the thief with the colorful underwear was the man behind the account and that he had tried to sell some of the stolen merchandise at another Queens location.
Police were able to identify the suspect from the initial surveillance footage, the Instagram account, and later, video from the location where he tried to sell the stolen goods.
NYPD officers of the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Division arrested the 30-year-old suspect at his home in Queens on Wednesday.
He is currently awaiting arraignment in federal court in Brooklyn, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
The two other suspects have yet to be apprehended, police said.
