A TEENAGE boy has frozen to death after he attempted to climb a volcano without a guide or any safety equipment.

Paolo Sánchez Carrasco, 14, posted a haunting final video just three days before he was found by a rescue team after they were alerted of his disappearance.

He is believed to have died of hypothermia at around 15,682ft above sea level after climbing Iztaccíhuatl – a dormant volcano in Mexico.

Iztaccíhuatl is Mexico’s third-highest peak and stands at over 17,000ft.

The rocky terrain, steep slopes and often icy conditions make the climb categorised as technically challenging.

Before his death, hePaolo posted a selfie video to social media, saying: “Turns out it drops to minus two degrees at night up here.

“And what sucks is, well, I’m gonna freeze my a** off. I didn’t even bring a sleeping bag, and I’m really far from the shelter.

“The next one’s way over there, but it’s on the other side of the mountain.

A woman named Angela said she had been trekking up the same volcano at the same time as Paolo.

She wrote: “Just as we were reaching the second pass, the storm hit. We had to camp beside a rock wall.

“Unfortunately, we were soaked and had no choice but to take shelter in our tent – that’s what stopped us from going any further.

Paolo was reportedly fond of camping and often headed into the mountains on his own.

Cops are still trying to piece together the teen’s final few days with him believed to have travelled from Mexico City to Iztaccíhuatl on July 12.

The journey takes around 90 minutes by car but Paolo couldn’t drive himself due to his age.

Mountaineering experts and guides always recommend climbing Iztaccíhuatl with proper equipment.

This includes thermal clothing, specialist boots, gloves and camping equipment in case the trek is longer or harder than expected.

They also stress the importance of acclimatising to the altitude and climbing with experienced guides.

Paolo is not believed to have most of the correct equipment with him.

His tragic death comes just weeks after another young climber died while climbing a volcano.

Brazilian traveller Juliana Marins, 26, slipped and plunged more than 1,600ft from a hiking trail along the crater rim of Mount Rinjani in June.

The publicist and dancer, from Niterói, near Rio de Janeiro, was trapped for four days after she fell while trekking up Indonesia’s second-highest volcano.

Heartbreaking footage showed the tourist smiling and joking with her pal before fatally falling into an active volcano crater.
