The View’s Sunny Hostin Calls Trump Labeling Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed a “Jihadist” Islamophobic and Despicable

On Monday’s episode of ABC’s “The View,” co-host Sunny Hostin condemned President Donald Trump’s description of Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, as a “jihadist,” calling the remark Islamophobic and despicable.

Hostin praised El-Sayed’s response, comparing it to John F. Kennedy’s statement that he was not seeking to become a Catholic president, but rather a president who happened to be Catholic. “El-Sayed said the same thing. I am running to be a senator who happens to be Muslim,” she said. Hostin highlighted his qualifications, noting that he earned a medical degree from Columbia University, was a Rhodes Scholar and received a doctorate in public health from Oxford University. She called him one of the most qualified Senate candidates in years and said he handled politics extremely well. Hostin also criticized what she described as repeated Islamophobic comments about his campaign, including Trump’s decision to label him a jihadist.

“I think it’s out of line,” Hostin added. “I think it’s out of pocket for our country to be a country where all religions aren’t welcome. I think it’s really despicable the way he’s been treated.”
